.308 Browning BLR
« on: January 17, 2007, 05:40:52 PM »
I'm new to the site - what a great place - tons of info.  Anyway, I just picked up a used '81 .308 BLR (steel receiver) - it just shouldered so well and felt so good that I just had to have it.  I mounted a Nikon ProStaff 2x7x32 on it and am hoping to get out to the range this weekend.  Anyone out there have one in .308?  Any opinions on what factory ammo this gun prefers?  I'm thinking 150 - 165 grain should be plenty for MI deer.

I shoot the same rifle, but I have a Leupold 2X7 on it. I'm shooting 150gr Hornadys in handloads in it. Very accurate, have yet to recover a bullet from a deer. As far as factory ammo goes, your right on track, besides which most .308 ammo is going to be in that weight range anyway. Try a few and see what your rifle likes best.
P.S. Welcome to GBO, You have a great gun there. Enjoy it!

You will enjoy it for sure.  This is the rifle my son grew up with for his deer rifle.  He has taken quite a few whitetails and two black bear with it over the years using Federal 150 grain factory loads.  I also took a blackie with it myself about five years ago.  I think you are on the right track with the 150 - 165 grainers.  Enjoy!  Rev

Ckk416,

Most who own or who have handled the Browning BLR have developed a very keen fondness for the rifle.  The BLR, with a steel receiver, was my first rifle purchase back in approximately 1972 or so.  I have not used the rifle for hunting for several years so I do not have a factory load suggestion for you, but I do agree with the others that the weight range of the bullet that you are considering is right on the money.

Best of luck with your new rifle and good hunting in the field.

I handload Nosler Partitions in 165 gr.  My rifle does not shoot 180 grs. nearly as well.  My moose this fall weighed 720 field dressed and didn't know he hadn't been hit by a 30/06!
