Help, Which type of powder to use ??
« on: December 04, 2006, 12:17:47 PM »
I have been trying to read up on past posts about actual black powder versus powder alternatives.  This is a very confusing subject that I have been trying to muddle through. I will be shooting a Knight Disc Extreme in Spring. I have already decided that I will be only using powder, I am going with the stock breech plug for now, I might experiment with the Power Breech later on.  When I looked at the Knight website, it looks like they use the 777 powder quite often  I mentioned this to my friend and he told me that I could have the few cans that he has.  He told me that he really was not satisfied with it, he shoots a Encore first type.  I have found quite a few posts on the crud ring and barrel fouling caused by the 777.
I have looked around town where I live and I can find the alternative powders at most sporting shops.  I have found the 777 and Pyrodex powders.  The black I would need to drive about 45 miles to Track of the Wolf, this would be no problem.  If black is the preferred powder, which powder Swiss or Goex for best results.  I just don't know which one will be best to start experimenting with.  I have also read articles on the downsides of black powder.  Help ???

Thanks,
Mike

I have had great luck with 777 ffg. When I shot sabots there was the ole crud ring. But a spit patch between rounds solved that problem. Accuracy has always been good. My little internet group of muzzleloading buddies have found 777 fffg does a better job for them. Much cleaner burning. No crud ring. Up until now I've not been able to get fffg. But I found some, and will be getting a can or 2. I've never shot true black ever. But it's good to have internet buddies. By far Swiss is the chosen true black powder. Swiss was in fact the powder used for the winning team at the Friendship Muzzleloader Rifle championship,

I have great success with triple 7 in my two Encore barrels, one Pro-hunter and one standard Encore M/L. I have owned 5 Encore muzzleloader's and all shoot the loose triple seven well. I have tried , Goex black powder, Pyrodex, American Pioneer and nothing shoot's as well as the triple 7 powder.

For me, 90 grains of 777 ffg, vari-flame ignition (CCI small rifle primers), MMP 3-petal sabots, and Hornady .45 cal 300 grain XTP's work well in my Encore. It took awhile to arrive at this as I experimented with a variety of different components. I'm not sure that any one component 'did the trick', but as stated, this is what works for me on paper. In honesty, I only tried 777 pellets and AP fffg powder before switching to 777 ffg. No crud ring with the vari-flame ignition, BTW.

Howdy,
Thanks to everyone for the information, sounds like the 777 is probably the way to go.  I have been reading quite a bit on the vari flames.  I either am missing something or are these not available for the Knights?  I can't seem to find them listed on their site. Although I have read about great results with the Power Stem breech plug. I am picking one of those up, sounds like they work pretty well with the 777.

Here is the place to go to see the vari flame.  http://prbullet.com/vf.htm
