How to handle dog catches
« on: October 29, 2006, 02:57:46 PM »
Can anyone tell me what they do about catching dogs. I let them loose, but I'm wanting to know if there is a way to get the law involved to force the pet owners to keep thier pets from running loose. There are leash laws but it seems people think that if they live in the country that they can let thier pets run everywhere. Worm

Dont go shooting dogs, this will  backfire on you some day.  Either use catch pole, cage them and take  to dogpound or take to owner if you know owner.  If your down south some landowners do say to uthanize  dogs WITHOUT collars.

i turn em all loose, no need in giving trapping a black eye. had one land caretaker tell me to kill all dogs i caught lol he rode by one of my sets and found a black lab in it, said he pulled is 357 out and just coulddn't do the deed. he ended up keeping the lab for a few years.
get a good catch pole and turn em loose, if you know the dogs owner maybe take him home and have a little talk with the folks.

I always have turned loose every dog i've caught. If I recognize the dog/dogs I give them a ride home.  Nothing will give trapping a worse reputation than people suspecting that their dog that didn't come home was caught in a trap and the trap or trapper killed him. Ace

Catch poles work the best, especially if you are alone-you can do it yourself. I agree not to shoot them. Thats about the best way to lose landowners respect and trapping rights. I try to stay out of as many "pissing matches" as I can. The only ruffles I usually run into is coon hunters with dogs, but thats another topic.

Creekchub , now thats an idea  i never thought of and  since ive whacked 7 skunks just during mink season this far i (surmise) where  some of the pure quill will be going if the situation happens.   I think the skunks in my area have decided to check out wet sets..._L ;DL

house dogs is one thing, we try to hunt as far away from houses as possiable, but how do you handle hunting dogs? may be a mute point if no hunting is allowed.

Release them and if collar with name on call owner to pick up.  Dog without collar, humane society, left at close by residence for Humane society to pick up.

I have a catch pole, actually I have 3 of them, but thats not the problem. I let the dogs loose, but was just wondering if anyone had any experiences with trying to get the law to enforce the leash laws. Here in Ohio the pet owner must be able to control the animal unless they are on thier own property. The property I trap is privately owned and the owner doesn't have any dogs, so its dogs coming from other properties. Thanks for the idea about using some good LDC lure. Worm
