The Henry, partly because it's the only one out there now but also because it's a nice rifle. You might still locate a Winchester 94-22 Magnum if you look hard enough. Those two really were pretty much it.

You will not go wrong with the Henry I have one and love it and it is extremely accurate. Get one you will not be sorry. The WIN maybe a good gun but now since they quit makeing them and Win is out of business why take a chance in case it would have a problem later. I will also state the Henry has the best customer service in the business. Now before all you Win fans get upset yea one may never break but then again it could too so why take a extra chance knowing the company is now gone and they had already quit making the 22.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The suck that little bullet right down the barrell and put it on target! I only have the 22lr and love it.. I am saving for the magnum , which at their great price,, wont be long. Of course I want the Golden Boy so I will have to save a while longer. a great value.. and smoth as silk.

22 mag lever gun

:D

guys,  i agree with you deeply on the henry,  i have a golden boy 22lr with larger loop, octagonal barrel etc.   These are really slick guns,  and quite attractive to say the least.   Now you can get the heavy octagonal barrel and large loop on a black reciever model and save some money over the golden boy.   After having the 22, i must admit , i want a magnum as well.

Now to burst everyones bubble.   There is also another domestic lever 22 mag gun out there and price is in the same ball park.   That gun is the RUGER  96/22M.    Now this gun looks nothing like the so called western guns at all.   In all honesty it resembles a savage model 99 a bit, and kinda resembles the winchester model 88 i believe it is called.   It has a one piece birch stock, carbine length barrel,  flip up rear site.   And if you like the idea of clip or magazine feed instead of tube feed,  it has a 9 round magazine.   The mag is similar to the flush mounted ones on a ruger 10/22 , so it does not stick down below the stock.   To be honest , it resembles a lever action version of the 10/22,  i think the barrels even interchage.   So some of the high performance tricks guys are doing on 10/22 guns will work on the 96.   i also have a 22lr version of this gun, and must say, it is a quick acting ,easy to shoot gun, and very easy to maintain.   accuracy is respectable though i dont think it quite as well as the henry in that view.

So now you have at least 2 choices,  both from domestic manufacturers, both have respectable service in my opinion.  and similar prices.   It comes down to your taste.    I like them both.   I will say this though , you are much more likely to find the henry at your local dealer.   I have seen but a couple of the 96's anywhere but the larger gun shows.   most dealers around here stock the henry or can get one quickly.

hope i have helped you out some

Personally I like the Ruger 96/22 mag that I have. Well, actually it was a 96/17HMR that I bought the 22Mag barrel for. Since they are basically a 10/22 lever version it takes a matter of minutes to switch between the 17 HMR and the 22 Mag barrel. Plus they use the same mags. A little pricey though, about $275. Another pro is that a lot of the 10/22 mods will fit the 96 series.

I have a Ruger 96/22M with a Weaver 2.5-7 Rimfire scope and it groups 1/2" at 50yards all day long. Another plus is the short lever throw, a quick flick of the fingers is all it takes to work the action. I'm also partial to the Ruger rotary magazine. The trigger and sear need a little work to lighten them up though.

Although you would think that there would be a lot of the 10/22 mods that would work on it, I haven't found that to be the case. The stock, bolt and trigger group are all different. I may end up getting a 17 caliber barrel for it though, just to try out that caliber.

All in all, I have been very happy with this little carbine.

The marlin is a great choice. But verry pricey, as much as a 30/30. But it has the weight and feel of a high quility centerfire. Nice to have so many choices. Most who buy a lever action want a traditonal look, like the Henery ,Marlin, or Winny, I like ruger products but like the western look more than the savage looking 96. It cant be traditonal unless it has a long tube hanging underneath!

I had a Winchester 9422M after they came out.  It was not as accurate as I liked.  It had a smooth action and could be taken down but I like my guns to be accurate.  I've heard good things about the Henry's ... I'd go with one of them.

I got a bargain a few years ago on a 9422M and put a scope on it to see just how well it shot.  I found mine shot as well as any .22 mag with the cast bullets.  I haven't tried it with the jacketed bullets.  I took the scope off and now have the factory iron sights, and they work well enough for a 50 yard gun with my old eyes.

You may find a new 9422, but they stopped making them several years ago.  I do like the way it feels.  The Henry feels good as well.
