6.5 x 55 Black Poweder
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:38:03 AM »
I have been wanting to get into black powder cartrige shooting, and don't want to buy another gun at this time.  I have an sweedish mauser in 6.5 x 55 and was wondering if I could fill the cases with black powder seat a lead bullet.  Is this safe. I seems that the older blackpowder cartriges had verry little neck to case reduction in diameter or they were straight. Anyone load up there 30 06 type cartrige with black powder?

Thanks,

I do not load black powder cartridges at the present time but have been reading up on the subject.  I believe that your bore size is too small to do well with the black powder fouling.  Also, it's sorta like putting regular gas into a high performance racing car.  You get down the road, but not as fast as you should.  I would search for something in 40 to 45 caliber before I tried going black.   I would also try to find something where it is easier to clean Black powder residue fron the bore.   Best of luck to you.

It'll work, but isn't something I'd do. Shoving all that BP through that little hole in the end of the case is going to be really hard on them, probably stretching them pretty bad. The bullets don't carry much lube so you'll have to wipe the bore after every shot. Accuracy will likely be non existant, and then you'll have to figure out how to get the BP fouling out of your cases. I recommend against it, the Swede makes a wonderful cast bullet rifle but not with BP.
