NEF 10 gauge 3-1/2" Mag any kick to it?
« on: November 27, 2006, 11:25:51 AM »
The subject is sort of joking asked.  I know it's going to kick like a mule, and a big mule at that!  I just wondered if anyone has had an experience with this gun?  I can't find any 10 gauge ammo in town.  I see Fedral even makes some slugs for it.  I ran across one in a pawn shop today and the price is reasonable.  I sure would like to have that thing but if I buy it, I know I'll just have to shoot it.

I shoot mine 2 times a year.

Once to pattern it. It kicks like a mule.

The second time is when the bird is within range. Never notice it.

I've got both the 32" and 24" barrels for my 10. Love them both.

With the long barrel on recoil isn't a big deal especially in a hunting situation. The short barrel will wake you up, no doubt.

I have the Federal slugs but haven't shot them yet.

My dad used to have one with a 36" barrel and while it kicked pretty hard my 28" 12ga kicked harder with 3" shells.
I'm thinking of getting the 24" version and those Federal slugs just because.......

Ironwood, if the price is right, buy it.

If it's the long barrel version get it and a goose/waterfowl tag as required by your local regs and slap a goose silly for Christmas dinner. If it's the short barrel version do the above with turkey tags and enjoy.

BTW, my goose barreled gun loves the Winchester Supremes with the BBB load with the fixed Mod choke.

This is one of the long barrel guns.  It feels pretty good.  I think there will be a problem with ammunition.  I haven't been able to find any 10 gauge shotgun shells, of any kind, in town.  I probably would be shooting slugs mostly.  Hogs or deer.  The geese are on down south from here.

The slugs really don't kick that badly, nor do the goose loads. The turkey loads on the other hand ...

If you want to really test your recoil tolerance, get a box of 2 1/4 oz turkey loads. After about the 5th or 6th shot at the patterning board you'll certainly know that you've been shooting.

I really didn't think that it was that bad.  Yeah, it kicks, Yeah, it's a 10 gauge, but it's not nearly as bad as you expect.  Mine weighed in at 11 lbs, and that is a HUGE help in tempering the recoil.

Be cautious, though.  I ruined mine shooting steel through a great turkey choked gun.  Didn't know any better at the time.

Having shot my buddies 835 I am probably gonna get rid of mine and buy a mossberg. Dont see the benefit of this beast.

Two things.
First, determine exactly what choke the barrel has before going to the range for testing. My 32 incher has a mod choke and is fine for steel. I am not 100 percent sure that a slug is safe in this barrel. Hopefully someone else might be able address that point. I thought at one point H&R offered a 32inch 10 gauge barrel in a FULL choke for turkeys. I might be wrong here but it just means that you need to be sure of what you have before testing slugs or steel loads in it.

Second, if you find the recoil a bit much and stilll like the gun, http://www.mercuryrecoil.com/index.htm#top . These folks offer a recoil reducer that fits in place of the steel rod that is currently in the buttstock. Not cheap but it is probably the most effective recoil reducer out there. I think the size for the H&R is 7/8th's by 5 inches. There might be more info in the FAQ's section at the top of thew HandiRifle forum about this product.

Hope some of this helps.

I have the fully camo 835 Turkey gun but I like the NEF guns better.  Much lighter...

Thanks everyone for you input.  If I buy the gun it will be because it's what it is!  It's a big gun with a big hole in the barrel. :)  At over $2.00 per shotshell and over $1.00 for every slug, I don't think I'll be doing much plinking with the gun.  It's just a little on the heavy side to tote while wandering around in the woods.

As far as kick goes.  I have a Tracker II in 12 gauge.  Even fully dressed and the bolt hole filled with lead it's still a thrill to shoot! ;D

I have one that's been cut down to 21" and threaded for a turkey choke.  I put a Limbsaver pad on it and it's way easier on the shoulder than several of my other guns, such as a Benelli Nova pump gun in 12ga 3 1/2".  I'd say that the felt recoil is similar to a .375H&H in a nine pound gun.  Mind you, I've only shot it with Turkey loads.  I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a 10ga slug, much less have any experience with them.
