Lee's REAL Bullet, a question.
« on: November 18, 2006, 04:50:33 AM »
I'm sure this has been done to death, but I can't get the search function to work. This morning I was going through a box of moulds a friend had given me and found a 320 gr. Lee REAL double cavity mould. Have any of you hunters and shooters used this in the Huntsman. This bullet has interested me for a long time just never had the chance to try it, I have Pyrodex and Triple 7 on hand in the loose form. I also have a TC Renegade. Over all I figure it won't shoot as good as a sabot, just looking for experience.   Thanks for taking a look at this.

I haven't tried them in a Huntsman but I've shot REAL bullets in .45 and .50 T/C Hawkens with very good results.

Thanks for the reply's fellows. Yesterday I went to work and cast 62 of these 320 gr. REAL's, lubed 50 of them with Lee's Liquid Alox and just returned from firing three of them through my .50 cal. Huntsman. Starting out at 80 gr. of Triple 7 the potential looks good at least out to 75 yards. More shooting will be needed. Although I only had the time to shoot 3 I found them easy to load as is supposed to be one of their traits.

I have cast, and, used the real bullet in muzzleloaders with good accuracy.  I have a cva mountain hunter traditional with a 1:32 twist that shoots them extremely well.  My Huntsman has a 1:28 twist and shoots them well also.  I find the accuracy is a bit better if I lube with bore butter rather than alox lube.  The load I currently use in the Huntsman is a 260 gr.Speer hollow point handgun bullet in 45 caliber,.451.  The sabot is made by tc and is black in color.  I use 100 gr of loose pyrodex.  What a great load. :)

I tumble lube my 320gr REALs with LLA and then finger lube them with "Junior Lube" at teh range or when hunting.  No problems and great groups.  I recently added a lubed felt wad as an over the powder wad and groups went down to 2" at 50 yards ( five shots)!

I use 85grs of 3F GOEX.  Down from 95-100grains without the wad.

I haven't tried the shorter/lighter REALs.
