Have you ever split a forend on your Encore?

I shot around 50 rounds of 320 gr. cast and 27 gr. H110 through my 12" .454 Casull Encore barrel over Thanksgiving.  I took it apart to switch it over to a .243 rifle barrel and I noticed a hairline crack in the forend by the screw nearest the receiver.  It doesn't extend all the way through the forend, but I'm wondering if I should be pinning it with a cross-bolt or just not worrying about it until it splits, then buy a forend with the hangar bar system?  Let me know if this has ever happened to you.  The wood on this gun is custom, but I don't want to put the name out there because I'd hate to tarnish the maker's name.

Personally I would not put it back on. Once it cracks there is no fixing it. There cheap enough to just replace.

So should I just shoot it until it comes apart?  It's pillar-bedded with aluminum pillars that are epoxied into the forend and the screws are holding in the pillars (aka, it's pillar bedded)  So if it does come apart I won't damage anything, right?  It's not a major crack by any means, but I fully expect it to get worse.  An new forend from the same maker is around $60, so I should be able to get one that matches my grip fairly closely, figure walnut is figured walnut for the most part, right?  I'd send it back to him, but the pillar bedding is an alteration/improvement of his original "pillar bedding".  I ordered it pillar bedded, figuring it would come with aluminum pillars, but it appeared that he just glued in some dowel pillar and drilled through them for my pillars.

I have not split a Encore forend but I did brake off one of the wings that extend over the hinge pin on my 209x50 pistol barrel.
I got some gorilla glue and re glued it in place and painted it flat black. You can not tell that it was ever broken.
Wood can dry out and split on it's own.
If the crack is just starting you can epoxy it  and hope it will not get worse.

Since you altered the forend and the crack is in the area you "fixed" the maker has no responsibility for the cracks, why not let us know who made it? You should contact the maker about it and maybe you will find out why he used wood in place of the aluminum and what he recommends you do about the crack.

I broke a synthetic Encore forend and damaged the mounting screws on a 45-70 Encore shooting heavy Garrett loads. I sent the barrel back to Thompson Center with a note and they replaced both the forend and the barrel.

Based on this, I wouldn't keep on shooting the 454 until the forearm totally fails.

I did contact the maker and he has told me that fixing it would certainly cost more than a new forend and not be guaranteed to last.  BUT he said send me the forend when you're done deer hunting and I'll try to match the color and put together a new one with aluminum pillars for about half the cost of original.  That being said, he treats his customers right and I LOVE the grip he made for my Encore.  His name is Denzel Roberts, you can check him out at dwrobtcwoodnmor.tripod.com.  I will certainly work with him in the future when I need custom wood.

I have a set of the herrett style for my encore and they are very nice help with recoil quite a bit, he doesnt show it but he makes them for the encore as well.
