What shoots well in your Ultra Slug Hunter?
« on: October 06, 2006, 07:12:34 AM »
Just picked up a NEF Ultra Slug Hunter.

What brand/type sabot rounds have you found to shoot best?

Trying to get an idea before I go out and invest in a bunch of slugs to test.

Thanks.

my bro's 12 ga likes the Winchester Hi-Impact sabots, not discontinued I think.  It also shoots very well with the Winchester Platinum  Tips. My sis-in-laws 20 ga loves the Winchester Partition Gold.  Hope that helps.

1 oz Federal Barnes Expanders.
Mine seems to like the 3" even a bit more than the 2-3/4".
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter (12 ga.)
NEF SS Sidekick Muzzleloader (50 cal.)
Remington 870 Express (12 ga.)
Stevens 311-H SxS (20 ga.)
CZ 452 American (22lr)

I've had both the pleasure and the black and blue shoulder associated with the heaviest of the 12 gauge slugs. That combined with my own H&R Ultra Slug experiences I can state with some authority that even the cheapest slugs will perform extremely well when shot through the rifled slug barrel of the 980.

If you prefer you can spend your money on some of the exotics available including the Hornady .30 sabot but at ranges up to 100 yards even a 1 ounce 2 3/4 will prove both devastating and reasonably accurage. Myself I used stacked (out dated) encyclopedias for targets and regardless of load still obtained groups 4 inches or less and most were 2 inches or less. All were capable of penetrating multiple volumes, stacked several inches thick at 100 yards.

Now I know you probably won't be fending off attack from any brittanicas anytime soon or seeking to bag your worldbook limit for the day, but you've already made the best decision you could for using what amounts to the finest heavy artillery you can buy for breechloading fun that can still be carried.

Lightfields 2 3/4. Shot them for the last several years with super accuracy, holes side by side most of time. Good to 130 yards. I did buy some Hornady sst wishing for a 200 yard slug! It rained today after church so I will try to get to the range this week. The local gun shop will get the lightfields for 9 dollars a box if I buy 10 boxes, no problem. Had to order the Hornady's from bass pro web site 9.99 a box for the 12 gauge 2 3/4. I'll let you know how they shoot in the USH.

Remington Core-Lokt Ultras, Winchester Partion Golds, and Hornady SST's pretty much clover leafed in the same holes with my 20 USH.
Try them all and see what she likes!

Still sold on lightfields! Tried the hornady sst's yesterday not real good groups. My shoulder had already been pounded from shooting lightfields, I could have been a little jumpy. Still havs a few boxes of sst's and will try again. I posted results in the nef slug gun / shotgun section.

I shot my Ultra 20 gauge for the first time yesterday.  I had purchased 7 boxes of different slugs to see which would shoot the best before taking it to the field.  Results?

The Lightfields were the best.  Almost put one through the hole made by a previous one.

Once I tried the Lightfields I stoped looking, and you can't beat the price. Can get them for less than $8.00.........

My son uses the Winchester Supreme Partition in his.  It groups less than 2 inches at 100 yds.  It drops deer like a death ray.  His longest shot last year was on a doe at about 140 yds.  Dropped in her tracks.

Well I disagree with anything  will shoot well thru the Ultra. I could not get the  Brenekoo KO SABOTS to group, the Remington Copper sabots...AWESOME! The Winchesters- SO SO.....  I'll stick with the remingtons.

I have a 20ga.  Remington copper solids shoot 1 hole groups at 50 yards.  I've never tried anything else.

"pi" was meant to be pic, picture or photo. Most of the time typing I'm either fat-fingered or short-stroking the keys.
I don't have an USH, but a neighbor freind does. I would like to get one after handling his. Balances great and feels right. Simple, too.
He uses and highly recommends the Lightfield sabots, 2 3/4", blue colored shotshells.
I've also tried the Lightfields in my Mossberg 12ga. slug barrel. Very noticeable difference in accuracy with the blue ones and orange/reduced recoil compared to non-sabot Winchester and Remington's I usually shoot.
Have had a few slug shooters recommend the Lightfields.
