Velocity loss for Ruger 44 Carbine
« on: December 30, 2006, 05:44:48 PM »
I have recently aquired a Ruger 44 Carbine. It's the best walk around - truck gun I've ever had!  I hope to take a whitetail doe with it tomorrow. Does anyone know how much velocity is lost with an autoloader such as the Ruger 44 Carbine when compared to a non-autoloader shooting the same 44 Magnum load?

My very first deer rifle was a Ruger .44 carbine - many, many years ago.  Seems to me the barrel was about 18" and the MV was about 1750 with 240 gr. loads.  I don't know what you are comparing the carbine to, but I would agree with old06 - I don't think there would be much velocity difference with a different action and a slightly different barrel length, nothing significant anyway. JMO and old memory.............   Good luck with your hunting tomorrow.

Thanks for your input. I was able to take a 92 lb doe today here in NE Oklahoma with the little Ruger 44 Carbine. She was about 80 yards out, high lung shot, she went about 40 yards  before expiring.

Congrats on the Ruger 44 & the deer. We use these 44 carbine alot up here in VT. I own 2 & each of my boys own at least 1. The velocity loss isn't enough to say so with this gun. The deer will never know if it was 1600fps or 1800fps that hit them. They just go down.  My load has been a Horn. 240gr HP ( now XTP ) over 21.0grs. IMR 4227.
