I've harvested several deer with a 6x47 using the Sierra 80 gr. SSP and 85 gr. Nosler Partition.  You can get the bullets moving out at almost 3000 fps, which isn't too far off of the old 250-3000 load, and only 300 fps behind comprable loads in a 243 win.

The 6mm-223 (6x45) is an excellent round for whitetail.

I have been using mine since 1986 and have taken many bucks ranging from 40 yards on out to 225 yards using H322, AA2230 and 80 Speer Spitzers. Never had a deer run more than 40 yards after placing the shot behind the shoulder. Good expansion, but not so destructive.

Other than the 22 hornet, I haven't seen a cartridge in the contender that can equal the 6-223 for accuracy. Some come close, BUT no cigar!

Good shooting guys,

The late great Bob Milek really liked the 6mm-.223 on every thing from varmints up through large bodied Mule deer.  He shot many pronghorn, whitetail, & Mule deer - many of them at extended ranges- with this round.  One of his favorite bullets for deer, when using the 6mm-.223, was the 80 gr. Speer Spitzer.  He recommended a 14-15" barrel w/a 1-10" twist.

I say get one, develope a good accurate load, and go hunting!

Good luck, Del
