Which one? Kimber/Springfield
« on: December 31, 2006, 02:50:26 PM »
Well i have toyed with this idea for a while and have decided on a 45 for fun and up at the cabin at night for those pesty porkeys. I have it down to two and wanted some opinions on both. Its either the springfield MC Operator or the Kimber Custom TLE/RE II ( or the stainless custom tle/re II. Dont for get i am wanting one with a rail for night shooting.

I do not own a Springfield but I can tell you that the Kimber is a fine weapon. I wouldn't be without mine. It goes bang EVERY time.

I am glad you asked the question as I was just about to.  I am selling my Para Ord LDA 14.45 and want a good single stack 1911 with most of the bells and whistles.  The Para Ord is great but it is just to big and heavy for me.
I have looked at the Kimber Tactical group which are super because of the aluminum frame and the same models in SS.  Springfields "loaded" models are also tempting.  They are priced just about the same.

If anyone is going to jump in here, can you comment on reliability, feeding, trigger and accuracy?

Thanks for asking my question :)

Look at warranties and customer service feedback.

Buy the Kimber.....I bought three is the past two years...shopped hard but didn't pay over $600. for any of 'em. They are VERY nice pieces. I have a Pro-carry 4", a custom II  5"in 40 cal and a CDP 5". I wouldn't trade for anything less than a Wilson!  Ken

both those models are good guns. Id say at that level its a toss up. I do prefer kimbers over springfields for the most part and rate colts neck and neck with the kimbers.

Kimber all the way.  I bought an Ultra Carry II used and has been fantastic as my carry pistol.  I also purchased the Tactical new - it was a good price.  That pistol is nothing short of awesome.  Both feed reliably and go bang with every squeeze of the trigger.  If you go with a Kimber you will not have any regrets.

I have to throw my vote in for Kimber.  I am very satisfied with my Ultra carry.

I have a Springfield long slide that performs flawlessly and recommend it. I have seen the Kimber Raptor and it may be the most beautiful hand gun i have ever seen and rumors have it as a great performer and would be my first choice for my next 1911.

I had a Springfield Mil-Spec that I liked very much.  There were just enough things that weren't quite right for me that I traded it for a Kimber Custom II.  Love the Kimber.

You'll probably be fine with either one.

Kimbers are all made entirely in the US of A.  Only the highest end Springers are completely American made.  The others have the frames cast/forged/whatever in Brazil.  ...If that matters to you...  Like I said, that Springer of mine was very nice.

If it matters--and it doesn't too me.
Cast frames or slides are TODAY very good---well there are some that have a problem because of less than well done casting, but the same can be said of forged or billet frames or slides.
The issues MAY be based on the volumn of shooting one does.
If one looks to the Gunsmiths and their choice of frames to build on there are basically three.
Colt
Springfield
Kimber
Springfield and Kimber use some frames/slides in common and I think that S/A buys thes from Kimber.
Caspian produces frames of Cast and of Forged steel--this is ignoring the expensive Damascus steel.
If I were to be doing a full build-up  would go with Caspian.
The amazing thing is that just about every Smith likes Colt and Colt parts for the most part. Most of them assert that Colt makes good guns.
The choice is yours and no one can fault you for your choice--they may disagree.
I am going to use a Colt for my build.
Blessings

Can't really speak about the Springfield's but my Kimber Gold Combat in SS is the best 1911 I've ever owned!

Kimber!!!

I shoot a Kimber pro carry and it hits where I point and nevers fails to go bang.  ;)

Thanks for all the replies , i went with the Kimber. I called my local shop to check prices and he told me he had a Kimber stainless TLE/RL that i had to see $ 850 , used in new condition. I went today to check it out and its now mine, i just have to wait for all the NYC red tape before i can bring it home. Thanks again Tanoose
