« on: December 11, 2006, 07:22:00 PM »
took my first deer this evening with 500 s&w handi rifle, my green feild had eight does feeding, no bucks came out, before dark i picked a big doe about 75-80 yards, one shot with the mississippi magnum deer down, 110 -115 lb doe a good size doe for this part of mississippi, i hunt thick cover for deer and hogs, the 500 makes a great brush gun.

Congrats on filling your doe tag...I just wished I could have gone this year for the second season...I would have loved to take one with my 270...

I have been loading a  440 grain lead gascheck bullet with a 90% meplat with Unique in my 500 handi. I am anxiously awaiting the end of the year doe weekend in Oklahoma to see how it performs.

My wife found some loaded 500 ammo with a couple of 357 mags in my coat pocket and wonder if we had been invaded by dangerous game and I hadn't told her.  She thought there was no reason to have a that big of shell outside of Africa or Alaska. I told her we could book a trip if that was what she wanted......

"loaded 500 ammo ....  in my coat pocket"

This, my friend, is an extremely dangerous practice.

You guys with 45/70's take heed here also.

If you were to fall in water .....nothing more to be seen of any of you - pulled to the bottom in no time with all that weight.  ;)

Congrats on the deer kill, I've enjoyed reading about all of them this year - neck surgery in September has kept me from popping a cap at all this deer season.

Eskimo - is that the Lee 440gr bullet?

Great exercise program though.  Hauling aroung 10 extra pounds like that.  Seriously, the 45-70 is the way to go.  I've got 2 45-70's, a BC and a Shikari, and also have a 500 S&W.  The 45's are much more fun to shoot, the 500 is borderline painful.  I'm not too recoil sensitive, but the 500 gets your attention in a hurry.  I'm going to work on a lighter load for it after deer season is over, so maybe I can make it more pleasant.  A 45-70, though, is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.  OOPS- wrong post.  I shouldn't do this afer a 12 hour shift!  Meant to go on the heavy bullet thread.  A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Buy the jan 07 issue of guns magazine.  there is an article on the 500 handi contained therein.  or, you can ask quickdtoo to email you a copy of the article.  there is some handload data there, as well as all the major factory load velocity data.
