Anyone try a Barska scope on their BC or handi?
« on: December 04, 2006, 02:42:25 PM »
Hello guys --- anyone try a Barska scope on their BC or Handi?   ??? In general for the price seems like a good scope. Noticed in their specs they are quite heavy - about 23 oz. for the 4-16x50 tactical. With the full strength loads in 45-70 with smokeless, I am concerned with the weaver style scope base overhang on my BC. Was considering epoxying on a female threaded piece of metal to the barrel for an attachment screw through the overhand end to give it support, also less vibration and hopefully more accurate.
And I should thank Quickdtoo and Haywire H. for talking me into the BC a while back, a great shooting rifle! I shoot both black and smokeless with paperpatch.  Still thinking about that rechamber....
Bob.

I have a 6-24x42 barska varmint scope on mine and it shoots .5-.75 inch groups at 100 yards. Although it has been a good scope for the money, I think I would buy a little higher quality if I were to do it over. My rifle is only a 223 and doesn't have the kick associated with some of the larger rifles which I think could throw off a cheap scope. You get what you pay for. Check out BSA if you are interested in a relatively cheap scope with a little higher performance

yep got a barska, pretty good scope for the money. ive used mine, put it to work on 2 different guns and its does what its supposed to. i have the 2x9 x40 hunter model. they are a bit heavy for thier size but i see that as a good thing ( built well) i also have a simmons signature of the same power and the clarity is better on the barska.. adding some extra support for the base would prolly not hurt any though.. try it , you may appreciate it as i do.

I have a Barska varmint scope on my 223 ultra as well. Got a good deal thru Sportsmans Guide on the scope and rings.I have only had it on the rifle for about 400 rnds but it seems to be holding up ok.

bufflobob, i first had it on a 30-06 and then a Ak100 7.62x39 now it sits on my new 35whelen ... on the ak100 it withstood 1000's of semi auto fire  and several icy cold winter days.. still solid enough for nice tight groups on my whelen..i bought a new simmons for the whelen but liked the clarity of the barska better so the simmons now rides on the ak100 by the way the BSA scopes dont hold water in compairson to the barska ( in my opinion )..

I have bought 2 Barska scopes, and never had any problems with either.  One is on my 7mm rem mag. it handles the recoil with no problem, the same gun destroyed a BSA scope. I have found the best prices on them, and other brands also at www.opticsplanet.com

Again guys -- thanks for taking time to reply. I agree the extra weight should make it more rugged and also help reduce recoil.
I've gotten my hands on a Barska to look at and I have to say it looks very clear. On the one I looked at it had a green illuminated reticle, I liked that as the red reticles I've looked at seem to glare or overpower the background low light image -- tried that holding up in darkened room. The one thing that surprised me it was supposed to be a 4.4 in. eye relief, it seemed to be closer to just over 3 in.  :(
Other than that I think I'll order one and give it a try. Happy hunting and shooting ... Bob.

I mounted a 3x9- 40 Barska Huntsman scope on my stainless steel .223 NEF Handi several months ago and I couldn't be happier with it especially at the price of $25 NIB from eBay.  It compares favorably with my Bushnell Banner in clarity.  This inexpensive scope matches perfectly with my inexpensive Handi-Rifle a great bang-for-the-buck package.

So far it sounds like most everyone is happy with the Barska scope.  :)   So I've got one on order - 4-16 X 50.
My other question for those of you with a scope on a Buf. Classic or Handi ---  is with the heavier scopes ---  such as a Barska, should I be worried with that scope rail overhang???   Has anyone added support at the leading end, not just the optional set screw but attachment  for the base to the barrel??? Still thinking on adding metal piece female theaded --  epoxied to barrel, even possibly just a 8-32 threaded nut would give added support and reduce scope / bbl. vibration. The overhang of a heavy scope and a heavy recoil cartridge like 45-70 with 500 + grains, straining on those tiny three screws at the back end with the leverage, just does not look rugged for hunting.
Quickdtoo --- with your 45-120 rechamber, did you ever mount a scope on it ???
As always thanks for any and all replies... Bob.

No, I haven't, but thought about it for load work. I can't see putting any big scope on a .45-70 for hunting, it's just not needed for the ranges encountered in any big game hunting, specially with the .45-70 which has MPBR of roughly 250yds give or take, it's not a flat shooter and taking game at ranges beyond the MPBR would be irresponsible with a .45-70. A fixed 4x, 2-7x or 3-9x at most, is all that's necessary.  In over 45 years of big game hunting, I've never used or needed anything with more magnification for hunting deer or elk, and 99% of the time, my scopes have been on the lowest setting when game was taken, very seldom do they ever get set on the highest setting, it's just not needed. Varmint and predator hunting would be different, but the .45-70 is neither, unless for fun as knight0334 does with chucks. ;D

As far as bedding the end of the scope rail, some have done it, but I don't feel it's necessary, I've only got 2 or maybe 3 scopes that are big enough that I need to use the Ultra rail forward cross slot, I much prefer the shorter standard rail.

Thanks for the reply Quick-, and  agree someone shouldn't shoot to far and wound, that's everyone's responcibility.
However I for one like to get a good look at a critter before I pull the trigger, also I don't like to also drag a spotting scope along when hunting in the mountains. Looking across a valley to the other side sometimes helps to have extra scope power. So I like a scope I can crank up for a good look.
On a side note, did you get some good groups out of the BC 45-120 rechamber???
And congrats. on the 10,000 posts !!!! That amounts to a lot of time and dedication. You have truely helped a lot of shooters out there!!!   :) :) :)

Bob, the .45-120 BC is a great shooter, very accurate, but with my eyes, I need a little optical help, best I've done so far is at 200yds using the Williams FP target sight shooting 525gr Beartooth Piledrivers. With glass, I could check the load and not so much my eyesight!! Haven't scoped it yet, just thought about it! I also have a Smith Ladder sight, finally got a good peep slider for it, I want to try it, but I think I'll put a scope on it first and make a good long range load, then put the long range sight on it for 300yd shooting as that's the longest shot I can make at the range.

The bottom pic is Bernie's(dodd3) BC.

Thanks!

Tim
