First Buck with Contender
« on: December 11, 2006, 12:46:31 AM »
Killed my first buck, second deer, with Contender yesterday afternoon just before dark.   Super 14", .30-30 handload using 130 gr. Hornady S.P., AA 2230.  Buck was 120 yards, ran about 30 yds and dropped dead. Fairly nice 10 point, 150 lbs.  on my club in S. GA.
Sure was fun!

Congrats to ya, it is always a plus to do it with a handgun.  ;D

Congratulations. You are hooked now, and if you stick with the pistol you will become a better hunter, and enjoy it more.  If my old eyes would permit I would still be a pistol hunter, I still carry it along, and hope for a good clear shot, but have to do most of my hunting with a rifle with a high power scope on it.

Congrats!  Those Contenders can be addicting.  I do about half of my hunting now with one or the other of mine.  Did you use the regular 130 gr.?  Or the SSP?  I've used the SSP with good success.  I've found the Nosler 150 BT is better at long ranges though.  It makes the .30-30 Contender into a real 200 yd. deer slayer.

Lovedogs, thanks for responding.  The bullet I'm loading is Hornady Spire Point. I never could find the SSP, don't think it's on their web site any more, but I guess some distributor could have them in stock.  Is there much difference? Yes, I'll probably experiment with the 150 gr BT. Last year I killed a big doe with 150 gr factory Win. Power Point, it also performed perfectly.  Steve

The 130SSP has a softer core and thinner jacket than the 130SP so it expands more readily out of a handgun.  But when I lived in Alaska a lot of hunters using T/Cs in .30-30 and .30 Herrett shot the regular 130SP to good effect.  My hunting partner and I shot dozens of Kodiak Island blacktails with the 150 BTip out of our .300 Savage T/Cs, and it gave outstanding performance.  Velocity was around 2300-2400 fps, sub-moa accuracy, all the wound damage you could want without excessive meat loss.  The longest kills were around 250 yards, both with almost complete penetration - lengthwise!
