picked up new girl friend today she's a honey
« on: February 16, 2007, 07:59:05 PM »
I got a 38-55 94 winnie today made in 1907 I'am 47 she's 100 kind'a like the anna nicole deal ! but I'LL SHOOT THE HECK OUT OF HER!
I think I will load her up with some black loads see what the[ ol'e girl does! ] But i was wondering if useing gun cleaner wash
(quick scrub ) or such will clean out the receiver from blow by!  I shoot single shots in black so I have never had this problem.
I wash out  with soap and water  any thoughts will help and I do aneal my cases so they are soft. I just dont want to gum her up.
She is a nice sporting rifle it was a custom order rifle but I AM a shooter not collecter just want to keep it nice!

one of the best black powder cleaners ive found is windex. But if you want to keep that gun nice using black your going to have to pull it apart and really clean it occasionaly

I also just use Windex with vinegar. You will have to take it down to keep her from getting gummed up. That's the draw back for shooting black.

I have several cap and ball revolvers I bought at gun shows when springs rusted through and they didn't work any more because the previous owners didn't clean them enough.  A good cleaning and a couple bucks worth of springs and they worked like new.  I tend to strip any gun I shoot black powder in all the way down when I am done shooting, and clean them up good.  In fact some of the revolvers I shoot until they won't turn well anymore, then I take off the grips and into the bucket of hot water they go.   That would be hard with a rifle.

Yeah I dont really want to pull her apart it's got virgin looking screws this rifle is purdy! clean but I have the urge run some black loads through  her I think maybe I will re-think it! MY cap and balls I do the same pull the grips and hot water soap then blow them out with air then WD-40 THEN blow them out then oil then blow them out again this gets them purdy clean SO the morel of this question IS shoot more less cleaning! HEY thanks guys for some Info.

I loaded up some black powder in my Marlin 336, .30-30 just for grins.  I was okay until I cleaned from the muzzle, instead of pulling the bolt.  What a mess!  I ended up stripping the action down completely to get the mix of Hoppe's and fouling out.  You might give thought to cleaning from the breach if you use the Holy Black.

Boommer,

If you anneal the case necks and neck size only, that = no blowby = no need to take the action apart.

Winter Hawk,
Regarding cleaning a b.p. lever action from the muzzle, I have found of you turn the loading port facing down, that keeps the crud out of the action.  I've done that a number of times with my '73 and '94 and it works Aok.  Haven't had to take the actions apart yet.

If you intend to shoot black powder through that rifle you will have to use a bore cleaner designed to deal with black powder or you both create and get an unbelieveable mess that could cause serious fouling in your barrel.

Before you shoot black powder clean the rifle and action with a good black powder cleaner - Windex comes to mind - and use the same after you choot the black powder.  HTH.  Mikey.
