Heavy residue
« on: December 20, 2006, 02:27:14 AM »
On my last trip to the range, I noticed that after shooting some newly loaded 30-30 rounds that there was a noticeable amount of residue in the barrel after each shot fired...I brushed the barrel each time to clear it but there it was again after each round fired...I loaded the cartridges with 35gr 4350 and used 165 gr Hornady BTSP...As the gun is a single shot with 26" barrel I thought this slower burning powder would be better than 3031 that would have been my first choice...The primers are Winchester Large rifle...What is going wrong?
I shot some factory ammo that did not have this problem.

Hard to say without seeing it, but first thought would be unburned powder, which should be pretty obvious. You can see the grains. If that's it, you don't have enough pressure to burn the powder.

I think I'd try the 3031........IMO 4350 is not fast enough for the 30.30 and much more suitable for a 30.06 sized case......

It does definitely look granular like the powder...That was my thought too, that it was unburned powder...Do you suppose using a magnum primer would help?
I do have some 3031, I will try that too.

I had the same problem using H-322 in my 45/70, and 450 marlin loads. Using a mag primer cleared it right up.   KN

I have the same problem with Varget with my 30-30 at 31gr. Going to try 32 and see if it makes a difference.

The big question is;  how did it shoot?  If it shoots well, you don't have a problem, if it doesn't, change charges, change powders, change bullets and play around with primers.  A rifle that shoots well with a particular load that also leaves some "residue" is a not a bad thing.

It shot OK till the scope started moving around...Those narrow groove rail mounts just couldn't hold up...I am reluctant to have it D&T so I may stay with open sights...Sometime after Christmas, i am going out to the range to try it again.
