Dogs running trash
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:19:37 PM »
I got a 1 yr old bluetick that loves to trail anything and have tried just about everything to break him from it. I came uo with this solution. if your dog likes to run deer and is supposed to be running coon then get some deer scent and some coon traing scent and make to long trails that intersect each other and put one of them big ole rat traps at either end of the deer scent. Sent your dog off on the coon scent and when (if) he deciedes to run the deer scent he will have a nice surprise. I did this ONCE with my dog and he hasnt ran trash since. You can use whatever scent that the dog is trailing
I break for animals, I eat them and wear their skins.

Some dogs makes it almost imposable to break them off of trash. Years ago when i was running dogs i used an electronic collar to control my young dogs. Another trick i used was necking a young pup to an older and stronger hound and had fair luck doing this. I have tried the deer hide in the barrel trick and some times this would work and some times not. I have found that the young dogs that are the hardest to break made the best dogs in the end. Dogs are like people some catch on quick and  some stay stupid for a long time. I hunted Lion and Black Bear in the day time and Coon at night, I used to take hunters out from all over the country until my best hounds got poisoned when i was out of town and my x old lady let them go for a run, well when i returned home i found my two best hounds about 150 yds from the house, Needless to this tore me up so bad i gave the rest of my hounds away and have not hunted with hounds since. I kinda strung this out { sorry about that } Good luck.......Joe........

there really is no clear cut answer, some tricks work on some dogs and some dont, you usually have to try several things to find out wwhat the individual dog will respond to.the best thing i found is to break a young pup before he ever gets it in his or her mind to start.it is easier to teach them what not to do than it is to break a bad habit. iwould put the pup on a deer, and always make sure it is a deer first, then when the dog goes after it,use the shock collar. a young pup will usually learn much faster than a older dog that has already started to enjoy running trash.best of luck
