I feel very lucky, I have lived around the world and never experienced this. My vehicles have been broken into several times, minor things taken, but nothing serious. One time I had cashed a check for teo hundred dollars, put the money on the check book, and them placed it above the sun vissor. Who ever broke in the vehicle only took a container full of tapes, never touched the checkbook and money. Two days later I found the tapes, they had looked them over and must not have liked old country music, sos they threw the tapes in some bushes downw the street from my house.
My son has been broken into several times, and he lives nearby, once while he was in the bed asleep. They went into his bedroom and stole his wallet, my daughter-in-law's purse, and then left. Neither of the two awoke, and the dogs did not bark. Course, my daughter-in-laws whips the dogs when they bark, and had complained when mine do bark. I told her they were just doing their job, and if sshe had not traained her's not to bark most likely they would have woke them up.
As I understand it, being broken in to is about like a women being violated, you just never have a secure sense about you again, and will always be on your toe in the future.
