Help! Lyman furnace is OOC!!!
« on: April 27, 2003, 06:36:37 PM »
Gents,
Fired up my old style 20 lb Lyman casting furnace today and it started to get hot and I went off to do half an hour's chores before it got up to casting temp...problem is when I came back the pot was stone cold.
I measured the voltage coming out of the rheostat and got 120+ volts so it looks like it still works, even bypassed the rheostat and went directly to the element ends, but it still didnt' get hot.
I measured the voltage from one end of the element to the disconnected end of the feed wire and only got 20 volts?
Could my element be burned out?  is there anything else in there that could be burned out?  Does anyone know if Lyman will have parts for this 20 year old pot?
  I appreciate  your advice!!!

thanks,
 Graycg

Lyman lead furnace problems

Disconnect power. Disconnect the leads to the element. Put your meter on ohms, and measure resistance accross the Element. If you have a very high reading or infinity the element is bad. If you have a low ohm reading, the element is probably ok. Next check the Thermostat. It should also have a very low ohm reading when the pot is cold. This is the part most likely to fail. Lyman pots have a habit of short life on temperture controls. I experienced the same problems, and bought an RCBS, that I've had for about eight years, and cast thousands of bullets.

If the thermostat or element s bad you might go to the Lyman Webb sight and see about getting a replacement part.

Good luck

Jim
