Big Boomer
« on: December 19, 2006, 05:10:28 AM »
I am new to this site and the Encore pistol family. I currently have a 22-250 and 7mm-08 custom Magna port barrels and a T/C Custom 270 ported heavy barrel. I am thinking about trading in my 270 barrel for a Big Boomer with manageable recoil. I am leaning towards a 358 JDJ, 35 Whelen, 358 STA, or 475 Linebaugh. I don't want it to kick so much that I won't enjoy shooting it. Has anyone shot a 358 STA in an Encore Pistol? Also asking for suggestions as to barrel manufacturers and lengths of barrels. Thanks in advance for any advise.

My 1st post. I got a .358 JDJ 14 inch barrel on my contender and it seems worse than my .375 JDJ. But it's a sweetheart!!! Just make sure to get a muzzle brake of some kind. My set-up is from SSK with their arrestor brake and it works good. Still a handful but probably won't be as bad on the larger/heavier Encore. Good Luck.

I believe you'd be disappointed with the .358 STA in a 15" barrel.  Too much powder for that length tube, it will have horrendous flash, report and recoil, and relatively poor velocity for all the pain.  The .35 Whelen makes much more sense, as does the .358 JDJ.  If it were me I'd take the JDJ cartridge unless you have to have factory ammo.  None of these are pussycats to shoot with full loads.

I own a 35-06 JDJ. Let me tell you it is a work of art. It has an integral muzzle brake. It is 17.5" oal. It shoots 225 gr B-TIps to 1/4" at 100 yards. Its recoil is stiff but it oughta be. I get 2670 fps with the 225's. I do think you would be extremely disappointed with a 358 STA. I lose zero cases when fireforming and of all my handgun barrels I loved this one and the 270 Winchester the most. That 270 was a dream. Took W.T.'s with it and it was a trusted meat-getter.

That 35-06 is spotless & it is for sale. Visit www.sskindustries.com and check it out.
