Huntsman #11 primer?
« on: December 12, 2006, 04:47:38 PM »
Was the huntsman ever made with a plug that takes a #11 cap ?
I want to get a huntsman, but will never leave the trusty and easy #11 cap (T/C Black Diamond), never fails to light the powder, NEVER had a failure in over 8 years.

If the huntsman was ever made with a #11, can I just get an older plug ?

I will prob get a M/L -  20 gauge Ultra barrell combo, anything to look out for ?

But if It wont take a #11 then its a no go, I'll go with T/C

I don't think the Huntsman ever used a #11 cap for the simple reason that the action has a firing pin. The #11 cap requires a flat faced hammer to strike the nipple with sufficient area to set off the cap.

yes the original huntsmans used #11 caps they only came in 45 and 58 cal.the earily models used a push in breech plug with a o ring to holdit in.....the better ones used a screw in breech plug....the firing pins were largeer than reg.recievers to cover a # 11 cap..they discont. these when somebody got hurt with a plug coming out with a hangfire or something to that efect..that why h&r went out of buisneess so im told....these are like 12 years old or longer.....i see some every now and then so if you want one they still can be found...about 100 bucks is a starting price....they had slow twist rifiling so balls was the norn for shooting...i had both cals both shoot good.....if you still want one i would recomened the screw in plug.....the plug has 2 small holes on each side of the nipple for removeing the plug with a special tool......the push in plug has no holes by the nipple..........hope this helps......need any more info ill try to help you.....jb

I think the orginal huntsmans were made in the 70s, but I could be wrong.  Auctionarms has a 45cal and a 12ga muzzleloader shotgun on there right now.  I agree with jbtazgrabber, I would stay away from the slide in breech plug also.  Just to many things to have happen.  I heard the guy was killed by the breech plug with the hang fire, but you know how a story can be change ;) My family has a few in 58cal and we got some converters that they will now shoot 209 primers. We have only shot round balls out of ours.  We are thinking of trying a lighter maxiball or something within that line to try something different.
The 58 and 45cal huntsmans are hard to find sometimes.  My uncle collects them.

Consider yourself lucky that you have never had a problem with the #11. It is true that a lot of the 209s are too hot for ML applications. But with the new 209s geared toward ML and the 25 ACP breechplug (with which you use a small rifle primer), life is even better. I can understand loyalty to something that has never failed you. However, the huntsman is much, much easier to clean than the Black Diamond, is lighter (mine in 7.4# with scope and steel Leupold rings), and, in my experience, shoots better groups (I know, my brother has one). Give it a try, you will not regret it. If you don't like it, you will have no trouble selling it. Your only real other choice is an Omega.

The old huntsmans still float around some. Just make sure you get the one with the screw in breech like they said. I had an add on another forum looking for a 45cal hawken style hammer gun for my wife and i had a man about 30 minutes from the hous give me one of the old huntsman 45 cal. it is one of the good ones to couldnt believe it but he said it had been given to him and he wasnt gonna sell it but he would give it to someone else. still a few good people around i guesss.
