Possum Question for RdFx
« on: December 19, 2006, 02:51:46 PM »
Hey RdFx
I was putting up some possums yesterday and got to thinking about you:-) I know you have them big jumbo northern possums like I do. I'm sure like me you leave the tail on like a proper possum put up should have.
I was just wonder when you put up your possums how do you finish the tail? Once you have the tail bone pulled and the tail split and fleshed. Do you pin it out like a coon tail? or lay it flat with cardboard and pin it like a mink?
Personally I stretch all my possums on wire. This lets me pull the tail up and wrap it around the base of the wire stretcher in a very natural possum position. I can then hang the hide to dry head down basiclly by the tail.
I think the fur buyers like this natural looking put up much better ;D and I usually get top dollar.

Mac you ol possum dumpster diver!  Just to clear  that statement up with anyone else reading this; Mac is king of possum grabbing  in dumpsters.  How do you think he gets all those possums ;D  ;D!!!! Heck  when Mac isnt stroking black and white  woods kittys  he is practicing his dive, reach and grab possums by the tail ( this is why he puts soooo much time in preparing possum tails  in his possum put ups)
Mac i put my possums up on wood ,  in fact  all my fur goes on wood, even wolves_heh_heh!  Anyway i do hang them nose down so  any fat if  left on pelt  can be wiped off and  doesnt go on skirt of pelt.  Sure is touchy  fleshing those silver foxes....LOL.... Got two black ones this year in mink sets no less, surprise, surprise as Gomer used to say... If you cant find a good market on the silver devils , let me know as i know of a fellow that buys them...
