« on: January 11, 2007, 01:14:10 PM »
Any one try  the new Hornady ammo? I just got a 4570 barrel for my NEF handi rifle , and I looking at ammo, not much to choose from.   All ive been able to find is405 gr. Seems like overkill for deer.

You won't find many 45/70 loads in most stores, but there are plenty of options from mild to wild available on the web. I mostly handload but decided to try a box of the LeverEvolutions in my Handi Rifle. They are very accurate for me and the one deer I shot never moved (large doe at 104 yards). The Remington 405's are also very accurate and are not "overkill" as they might seem. Due to the trajectory they would be best for under 150 yards.

Try www.buffalobore.com and www.garrettcartridges.com for kicka$$ .45-70 loads.

I would use some of these...He makes some good ammo...Look at the Nosler Partition load...It's not as fast as my hand load...mine clock about 2425fps out of a Handi.....but it will drop any whitetail you hit with it...from just about any angle too...The price is comparable with buying the components and reloading them yourself too...http://cpcartridge.com/cart2/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_87...I have found the Nosler partition to be just about the most accurate bullet I have shot out of my 5 45-70's...

Did you like those Garrett 'Exiter" loads for $180 a box?

I load quite a few different bullets ifor my .45-70, at velocities from 1100fps to 2200fps.  Costs run from $2.52 per box of 20 for 300g hardcast over a few grains of HS-6 to $9.30 for Hornady 350g JFP hunting laods to $23.98 for my preferred 350g North Fork hunting laods to $92.25 for the speer African Grand Slam Tungsten Solid, the same bullet used by Garrett in the 'Exiter' ammo.  (I slpit a box of 20 with 3 other people just to have some fun.)

There is a wealth of reload data out there and the .45-70 is one cartridge that screams to be reloaded.  As they say, it goes from 'mild to wild'.

I agree, nothing like using your own custom made ammo for hunting. I reload for all my gun.  ;)

I tried the 3030 Leverevolution ammo this weekend.  I just used it at 25 yds with open sites to get an idea of how they would do.  They grouped less than one inch with old eyes.  I think it is worth buying a scope for one of my 94s.  Ilike the idea of a 250 yd lever action.  Never thought I would put a scope on a 94 but things change.

I have a Buff Classic and have tried several loads in it. The Remington 300 hp shoot real good with low recoil. The leverevelution shoot good also but 7 in higher. I found that a handload of 46 gr of IMR 4198 with any 300 gr hp shoots real good and to the same point of impact as the leverevelutions at a better price. Hope this helps.

A little or a lot, depending...

How you should get set up will depend largely on how serious you are and whether you think this will be a long-term hobby or not.

If you just want to get your feet wet and see what is possible, Lee offers tools that, with dies, a pound of powder, some bullets and primers and some empty brass can get you started for well under $100 inclusive.  Some of the tools are designed for low-volume loading and will lead to frustration and dissatisfaction if used for high-volume production.  That's not a big problem as you can always get an inexpensive single-stage press when the time comes.

I got started in 1982 with an RCBS Rock Chucker.  It has turned out 10's of thousands of rounds and still works like new.  The RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme kit comes with about everything you need to get started except, I think, calipers - which can be purchased inexpensively (digital calipers for $7.99 at www.harborfreight.com).  You will, of course still need to have the dies, powder, bullets and brass.  This is a more expensive but still very reasonable way to go if you are serious about reloading.

Then there are the turret and progressive presses, which I don't generally recommend to beginners.

You will need a couple other things - a quiet space, preferably dedicated to reloading, and a sturdy bench or table.

You will also need load data.  The RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme comes with a manual but check the online data at www.alliantpowder.com, www.accuratepowder.com, www.ramshot.com, and www.hodgdon.com.  The odgdon Annual Manual is available for about $8 and provides a handy reference.  I use more Hodgdon powders than anything else and have the Annual Manuals for every year dating back to 2004.

Have fun!

Re reloading

I started a few years ago with a Lee Turret press and was putting out ammo for just about 100 bucks not counting the cost of bullets and powder.  I have expanded to include a singel stage press also a Lee.  I never really kept track of time to reload becasue I do the deprime and prime on stages until I get bored with one and decide I need to move on.  But if I have primed brass I can probably turn out200 to 300 rounds in an hour but I dont rush things too much and sometime do less.  This is for handgun ammo.  You can spend more as you buy more dies for more ammo types.  Then you will want more types of powder and different bullets.  So you can keep it simple or really get into it.  I find it fun.  I have a job where I get paid to think, so doing this lets me see something get produced.  Dont let anyone tellyou different Lee is good equipment.  I dont think I would bu one of their progressives.  If I wanted that type of production I would go with a Dillon. A good starting book is ABCs of Reloading. It explains the equipment and process.

tried it in my 30-30 model 94. Since I hunt in thick woods the heavier recoil of this ammo makes no sense for me. I shoot 150 gr Feds at $12 a box and they are just fine.

For about $100 us can get into reloading big time. I've been a user of Lee products and love em. I've loaded somee realy accurate ammofor muhandi 45-70 with my Lee turrt press. A single stage will do you ok too. Good luck and have fun. I really take pride in killinggamewith ammo that I have rolled myself. I was really pleased 2 years ago when my 16 year old son and 14 year old daughter made one shot kills on bears with ammo dad had rolled.

I think Im gonna start doing some reading. Another quick ?I dont have a space to do it in the house, so its gonna be done in the barn. Now is 7 degrees outside. Can powder be stored in the barn. I dont keep the barn heated, only when Im in it

I wouldn't worry about powder freezing unless you are far north where it gets really cold.  Summertime heat would be more of an issue, I think.  Ideally powder should be kept in a cool, dry place.  Room temp is fine.  Maybe you could keep the powder in the basement and carry it to the barn when ready to use it?
