The stock comes off easy, use a long extension socket wrench. Just wiggle the stock loose. I seal the stock inside with Varithane on coat will do. Make sure the Varethane is dry and hard before putting the stock back on. The bolt should be tight, I add a lock washer on top of the flat washer.
When taking the stock off mark the loction of the wrench handle, after you breake the bolt loose retighten the bolt again to the handle mark, that will give you an idea how tight is tight. A Ruger#1 with a loose stock will never shoot well.
