Easton ST Axis fletching problems
« on: September 29, 2006, 08:24:29 AM »
I've been using my Easton ST Axis carbon arrows since last year (actually my first year) of bow hunting. I have had the consistent problem of the vanes coming off. I'm not sure of the process my tech uses but I put all my faith in him, for he's been doing this for nearly 40 years. He's had the same problem with his ST's and I believe he now uses Gold Tip's.

Is there an easy fix for this or should I switch arrows?

Jp,

Ive been shooting the heck out of my axis, and the only vanes that have come off are the ones that Ive torn off by other arrows at the target.  Ive refletched my own arrows, but the original vanes were put on by my local shop.

The arrow surface must be clean and LIGHTLY roughed up, then glue them on (with a jig of course).  I like to place a drop of glue at both ends of the vane, to prevent accidental tear offs should the arrow pass through the target.

I dont think your vanes and arrow surfaces were properly prepared prior to gluing.. or his glue has gone bad..

Remember to not only clean the shaft with alcohol but the fletching too.  Any injection molded plastic has a release agent on the die, usually an oil.  So clean the fletching too where you apply the glue.  I had the same problem until I started cleaning the fletching.  Lightly abraiding  the sharf and fletching increases the amount of surface area available to be glued too.

Another possibility is to use cresting wraps on the shafts and place the fletching on the wraps instead of the bare shafts.

I've bought 'em in 1/2 dozen packages (fletched and ready to go) and have the same problem... Many of them start loosing vanes after only 3-4 shots....
I'm using a whisker biscuit, too...but never had a problem with anything else!

Once I re-glued them they were A-okay!
