Pet loads for 30-06 22" barrel?
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:00:06 PM »
While I wait for my 30-06 Ultra to arrive, any hints on pet loads? My main interest is a hunting load for 200lb+ deer and hogs up to 600 lbs., that will yield MOA results on target from a cold barrel. IOW, I want to hit what I aim at with the first shot from a cold barrel.

Mine is 56gr Rl22 and the 200gr Nosler partition, Rem nickel brass and 9½ primer.

Wow,

I'll have to try that load, and hope for similar results. That's a very nice target.

That's right in the middle of Noslers load data, start is 54gr, max of 58gr. I never chrono'd it, but they show it as 2603fps in a 24" barrel.

Thanks,

Tim

Yup, My Lee book gives a max load of 58.4 grains at 2680fps. Looks like a thumper.

How did you arrive at .008" off the lands? Did you seat the bullet into the rifling and back off?

The problem with the Lee book is he uses generic bullets, the partition is anything but generic, it also shows min COL of 3.300", that will put you about .080" off the lands if your rifle is throated like both of mine!!! The Nosler book shows a SAAMI COL of 3.340", so I'd go at least that long if you're not into the lands. ;)

I use a COL tool that Randy Reeves makes, info is in the FAQs.

Lyman 47 isn't much help, either. I think I'll get the 30-06 loadbook when I place my bullet order with Midway.

The 2007 Hodgdon Annual is available I think, dunno if they have it yet tho. The Loadbook is an excellent book for the $7 they sell em for, I have several of em, a fella can't have too much load data!! ;D I have the Hodgdon '05 and '06, Hornady 6th, Nosler 5th, Lyman 48th, Lee 2nd, Sierra Infinity 5, Accurate and IMR pamphlets and still NEED more!!!!

You might want to get your Noslers direct from them, they have all of the partitons for less than $15 for a bag of 50, they shoot and function just as well as full priced bullets. They also have a lot of others at ridiculously low prices.

i'd try a 165 gr' bullet of either the Hornady Spire Point or Nosler Partition variety.     Or the standard Remington Core-Lokt, also in the 165 grain variety.   i load imr-4320 with those Remington bullets in my Model 700 in .30-06.........for great accuracy and plenty of power.

you'll get more velocity for hitting whitetails further out; and you'll be able to penetrate a hog's gristle plate, i'd think, out of the 22" barrel of a Handi'.

let us know how you do,

when my dad had his 30/06 handi i got to uise it alot  , with remington and hornady 150 grain bullets he used 59.0 of IMR4350- with remington and hornady 180 grain bullets he used both 56.0 & 57.0 of IMR4350 all very accurate.I myself sont use a hjandi but my 30/06 uses the hornady 220 RN with 54.0 of IMR4831  super accurate load. and would be great for those big hogs.
