OK to neck size only for a BLR?
« on: April 06, 2008, 04:27:15 AM »
Not sure if this has been covered before?
Since a BLR locks up like a Bolt Action is it OK to Neck Size ONLY the brass when reloading? Or is it still advisable to Full Length resize as with all levers?
Thanks!

I only neck size with a Lee Classic Loader for my .243 BLR.   Works fine with factory Remington brass originally shot in my BLR.

I shot some neck sized rounds through my BLR 81 in 223 yesterday. These were shot in my Colt before.
The last bit of lever travel was more difficult than it should be. This might make a difference in a fast follow up shot.
After I settle on a load for this rifle I will FL size the ammo I make for this rifle.

[OK to neck size only for a BLR?]

Maybe.   My early (ca.1971) steel .358 BLR had a minimum chamber, and cases required full sizing in RCBS Small Base Dies before they would feed reliably enough for hunting.

All the ones I've reloaded for required full length resizing. A few required small base dies for easy chambering. Byron

I FL size about every 3rd time when assembling mild target loads for the range.  I use new or once fired FL sized brass for hunting or whenever my life may depend on it feeding properly.  Seems to work for me.

Knol, Is you BLR your home defense gun? Not trying to argue, just curious how you determine if your life might depend on it. Regards, Byron
