WW 748 Primer?
« on: April 27, 2003, 11:14:19 AM »
I notice a lot of you use ww 748 for the 7-30 Waters. All the load books I have  denote Mag primers for 748 but I see a lot of you use standard
(CCI 200) primers. Do you see a difference, have you tried both ? Thanks.

WW 748 Primer?

I was just looking through the yellow Contender reloading manual last week regarding this very subject. I was getting ready to load some 7-30 rounds when I realized that I did not have any standard large rifle primers on hand, but did have several hundred LR magnum primers on hand. I decided to look to see if anyone recommends using magnum primers with WW748 powder.
The Contender loading manual shows using Federal 210 (standard large rifle) primers in all but the Speer portion of the 7-30 Waters data. Since I haven’t used Speer bullets in my 7-30, I never really paid much attention to their section in the 7-30 loading data.  My search did confirm that Speer is the only bullet manufacturer who recommends magnum primers with WW748 powder. Since I am only loading Hornady and Sierra bullets, I chose to stay with their loading data and did not switch to the magnum primers. More importantly, I have never had any ignition problems with 748 and standard primers, nor do I find any unburned powder residue in the barrel or case.

In loading W-748 in the 7-30 Waters Contender that I had a couple years ago I just used Standard Winchester Large Rifle Primers, and never experienced any problems. In fact with the Load / Barrel I was using the Standard Deviations were quite low, so I am quite confident that ignition was also quite uniform with the standard large rifle primers.

primers with W-748 and have discovered tighter groups with the magnum primers.  My 7-30 barrel likes some other powders better than W748 however so I quit using the 748 all together.
I suggest you try the mag primers.   You never know how a barrel will react to different formulations.

Thanks guys. Coltfan you are right about the speer manual, I thought I saw it elsewhere also. I try the standard primers, I had no luck with the mag primers but I had a bad day at the range. Thanks again.
