45-70 handi how strong
« on: December 17, 2006, 05:49:55 PM »
Of the three levels of reloading data avaliable for the 45-70 where does the Handi-Rifle fit. I feel it is a lot stronger than a trap door but not sure it ranks up there with a Ruger #1. Iam sure this this has been asked and answered before but Iam not allowed to search this site.

Welcome aboard! The Handi is available in .500S&W with a SAAMI MAP of over 50kpsi, in .45-70 data, that pressure is well into the Ruger load level with comparable case head thrust. But you more than likely will yield to the recoil in mid levergun levels without ever wanting to go into Ruger levels!! :o

Thanks quickdtoo. I have been reloading 300 gr hollow points with 50 grains of IMR 4198. This is the top of mid range to the bottom of Ruger range depending on which manual you look at. And yes it does have significant recoil but man it shoots good

An't that the truth!!!
I've considered get the 45-70 and using black powder only.

I had the same question about my .45-70 handi. I wanted to use Hodgdon's Varget and did not know which level was safe. I called Hodgdon and asked about using Varget in the handirifle. The technician told me not to worry about it. I could use the the heaviest data for it.

Also, there are a couple of companies that make super hot, factory loaded ammo for the .45-70. They include a list of rifles that are safe for this ammo. The handi is included on their recommended list.

I've shot the Buffalo Bore ammo out of my handi, no problem with the rifle, but the stuff was a little too "warm" for me (I yielded to the recoil).
I'm rethinking my loads and am leaning more towards 405gr bullets at moderate velocities.
