Interesting Vanguard yesterday
« on: December 12, 2006, 02:02:30 AM »
Yesterday a guy brought in a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in 300 Wby that he said wouldn't extract fired cases. I looked at it, and thought I could see a bulge in the chamber. I poured a cerrosafe cast, and it wouldn't come out. I melted it out, and pulled the barrel. Wow, my 190 pounds couldn't budge it on the end of a 24 inch wrench! Got my 300 pound neighbor, got him to lean on the wrench while I pulled up on the other end with another one. Finally we got it off. I poured another cast, and it slid out just fine. They had torqued that barrel on so tight that it distorted the chamber! I had to take .003 off the shoulder to get it to time up properly, reassembled it and test fired it. It worked just fine! I can't imagine why Howa feels the need to put who knows how many hundered foot pounds of torque on those barrels, when 30 or so will do just fine.

It's likely just some machine that's set too tight or too strong.. and no one really checks. If rifles were test fired that sort of thing would get caught. Of course no one proof fires guns here anymore. So I doubt Howa does either.. It took a bunch of torque to distort a barrel enough that a cerro safe casting wouldn't come out!! Just something to remember. Thanks for the heads up. It's a new one on me..

interesting...seems that their one and a half inch guarantee at 100 yards and the included target they shot....is BS.
