Stevens Tip Up
« on: January 04, 2007, 03:33:31 PM »
Just got this neat little Stevens Tip Up model. It' s chambered in .32-35 Stevens. Did a chamber casting to figure out the caliber, and now I need to slug the bore to find out which bullet it will need. Than it's off to the range for some fun!

Thanks Bernie! It will be awhile until I can get ammo made up. This .32-35 Stevens caliber is giving me fits, and I've been out of commission with a stomach flu irus for the last 4 days. Hopefully I'll get back to it soon, now that I'm finally improving!

Haven't fired it yet, but I have formed up ammo. I could have bought dies from C&H4D for $72, but that would have been too easy! Instead I bought a sizing die in .32-40 and cut 1/4" off the base of the die. Then chamferred the opening and set it up to resize .30-30 or .32 Spl brass. Either works fine after cutting about 3/16" off. Once the brass is resized I final trim it to 1.88" long, and chamfer the case mouth. I also slightly ream the inside of the neck to get rid of some thickness.
The .32-40 die is perfect when cut down, as it reduces the area just above the rim about .020" and still maintains the correct neck size at the mouth of the case. It's a very neat little cartridge that should perform equal with the .32-40, but a bit more efficient with the smaller case capacity.

The Tip Up is a neat little gun, made from 1870-1900. They went by the wayside when ole Josh developed his swinging block. They came in a slew of calibers .22, .32, .38, .44 for rimfires. Long center fires in .32, .38, & .44. Marlinman has the target model in .32-35, targets also came in .38-35, .38-45, .44-50, and .44-65
