Sportster question
« on: January 03, 2007, 03:51:03 PM »
I am looking at getting a Sporster .22 but I have to order it.  I have seen 2 different ones that are not Youth size.  One has a heavy barrel with no sights, the other has a thiner barrel with iron sights.  I want the heavy barrel, but have a feeling it is an older unit?

Welcome to GBO! H&R only makes one 22Lr barrel, they do make a 22mag in standard and bull barrel tho, the bull barrel 22mag is only available in the accessory barrel program or on the Ultra Varmint. The 17Hmr and 17M2 both have bull barrels.

I guess here is where the confusion comes in.

first, is NEF and H&R the same guns?

I see this one on Gun Broker, marked as a NEF .22lr
http://www.gunauctions.org/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=63435018

Then I see this one on the HR site, marked as a H&R .22lr

the barrel looks larger on the NEF. I want the heaver barrel and need to know what to order from my dealer so I don't get the wrong one.

NEF and H&R are the same company, the Sportster is an NEF product, just as is the Handirifle. The Ultras and several other products are H&R products, both companies are one under roof as H&R 1871 LLC, which is owned by Marlin.

Their current products don't include a bull barrel 22Lr and to my knowledge, never has.

The top pic is a 17hmr or 17M2, both of which have bull barrels, no sights and monte carlo stocks. The bottom pic is a 22Lr or 22mag, it has sights and a straight combed stock.

Do yourself a favour and just get the heavy barreled 17HMR Sportster and be done with it.
You'll never look back.
The .17HMR is simply lightyears ahead in performace compared to a .22

I already have a Savage 17hmr.  What I want is a single shot .22 for silouette, plus I need something to leave at my Dads in the spring when the skunks invade his deck. Plus with .22 I can use shorts in it at home and shoot it all day with bothering anyone.  the .17 is pushing the volume level if I want to shoot it more then a couple times.

I am also thinking of maybe buying a 17m2, It would be better for Dad so he don't have to worry about bullet drop when aiming.

I am 1/2 tempted to have percission Rifle make me one of these.

Actually the top pic looks like my .22lr sportster ? My barrell is stamped SPORTSTER model ss1, 22 long rifle. My synthetic stock looks identical to my 270 handi's synthetic stock. Mines about 3 years old. No iron sights. Not a Bull barrell but a little more substance than most ie: remington viper or std issue ruger 10-22. Tell you what though its a shooter !!!!!

My Sportster in .22 LR looks like the top picture, also. My .17 HMR Sportster looks just like it. No iron sights on either and both came with scope mounts.

My versa-pack .22 LR looks like the bottom one. My Sportster .22LR & >22 Mag look like the lower one also, except they have scope rails instead of "irons".
My Sportster 17 HMR barrel is a bull and appears slightly heavier than the top one..with no taper.
