Taurus 17HMR Revolver

Anyone have any coments on this gun?  Just saw one in the case at Gander Mtn. today.  I didn't know you could get the 17HMR in a revolver.  Hmmm!

The price on the 17 HMR revolver was $249...is that a good price?  It was new, not used.

IMO 17 HMR is a waste of time in a revolver.  With that little pill it only has velocity going for it.  Out of a revolver velocity is greatly reduced.  I looked at a good used Single Six in HMR but let it go for just that reason.  I think you are better off with a .22.  I have a 17 HMR  Contender pistol, and two rifles in 17HMR and like the round.  But not in a revolver.

Thanks for the insight.  I guess I really hadn't thought of the loss in velocity by firing from a shorter barrel.  Just thought it was a "Niffty" little revolver, sitting there in the display case.

With a revlover you loose pressure due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel as well.  So there is little more than the length of the cylinder.

   I agree with what Keith says about 17hmr losing alot when going from a rifle to a pistol. And then you lose a little more in a revolver. To say "It's a waste" though is a little extreme.  I think the 17hmr pistol  is still much flatter for a further distance than a 22lr pistol. I am a small game pistol hunter and switched to a Taurus 17hmr this year. I was able to cleanly take several Squirrels at distances I would not have tried with my .22 pistrol. This does not mean I am getting rid of my Mark 3 or Single Six. They are fantastic guns! Another thing you must think about is the cost of shooting though between a 22 and 17. Big difference there!

I bought one of these in SS for $300. a couple years ago.   Very accurate.   I suppose all the rimfires lose significant velocity in a handgun.  I have a 6"  SS Tracker in .218 Bee that doesn't want to shoot much faster than 2000 fps.   It shoots most accurately at about 1850 fps.
