new 700 LS in 221 Fireball
« on: February 01, 2007, 12:13:34 PM »
I just picked one up.  Does anyone have experience with one, or just with the Fireball cartridge in general?  I have to wait awhile until I can afford a good scope for it.  (thinking Leupold 2-7), so I'm just trying to gather info until then.  Thanks.

In 221 Fireball I have a Rem XP-100 and a Rem 700 Classic.
Both are very accurate.
If you reload you will notice it takes about 1/2 the powder that a 223 takes

Isn't the 221 a rimmed cartridge?  How does it feed from the magazine?  Never much seen the logic for a rimed cartridge in a modern bolt action.  The 221 case is used a lot in TC Contender wildcats.  It may not be a very high pressure round.

221 is a shortened 223 or 222

Nope, it's not rimmed, and feeds slick from the magazine.  Not sure of the pressures, but handload data lists 40 grainers at 3,300, and 50 grainers at 3,100, so for the small case, it must be a fairly high pressure round.  I bought it because I like "different" stuff, and I have always wanted one.

O-ya!! your going to LOVE IT ;D I do. I use mine for competiton at my gun club and my best group measure .276" center to center! of course with my hand load that after a triger job and free floateing the barrel. Though most of my group measure less then 3/4 of an inch. Good luck!! ;)
