Taurus M66 .357
« on: October 20, 2006, 10:50:38 AM »
I just picked up a Taurus M66 6" blued .357, and have been fairly impressed with it so far.  It feels a lot like a K-Frame Smith, except the trigger isn't quite as good (yet).  I ordered a spring kit from Wolff, so hopefully that will help a bit.  Anyone had any experience with the Model 66?  The lock up is still very good on the gun, so I doubt it has seen many rounds.  Are they basically Taurus' copy of the Smith 19?

I bought a new M66SS6 earlier this year and after a very short time it would not lock up and the cylinder would actually spin when closed. Taurus fixed this and it now appears to be a pretty good 'work horse' 357 but no where near as accurate as my Dan Wesson 357 6". Its still a fun gun to shoot though.

I have an older one stainless I LOVE IT! smoked a doe with it last year havent got one this year. I did my own trigger job a VERY smooth double action. I had my smith drill and tap the barrel i use a red dot on it. I use 180 gr cast core federals. Fixing to start loading for it.

I bought a M66SS4 earlier this year, and so far it has been great.  The trigger is as smooth as my K-frame Smith.  I'm impressed with the accuracy, although I've only put maybe 2-300 rounds through it.  Time will tell.

I bought a M66 4" blue finish in the Spring of '04' and I don't think it is as accurate as the S&W586 6" I used to have but that was almost 20 years ago and my eyes have aged some since then and the shorter barrel length makes comparison difficult.  I think the trigger on mine is every bit as good as the Smith, and maybe a little better.  I have loaded some pretty hot loads for the Taurus and it just keeps shooting without a single hiccup.  I think it is a heck of a good value when I compare what I gave for it to a new Smith.  I did have to change the original Taurus rubber grips out and put a set of Hogue Overmolded grips on it because the heavy loads would make a blister on the inside of my thumb between the two joints and then break it during a longer shooting session.
