I believe it is close to 70 because the loose powder equivalent to pellets is roughly 85-90 grains. Every Ml is different -so you would need a chronograph for the exact comparison. Without a chronograph, get the gun warm on pellets, then see which volume of loose powder that I mentioned produces almost identical vertical target hole placements. You may also need to adjust windage a wee-bit -- since loose powder is more compacted than pellets. If you really want to get precise, then you will need a powder weight measurer scale at the range table.

There is 7,000 grains in a pound of powder.

I use 85 grains of 777 ffg so the gives me 700/85=85.32 loads, so that's $25.00/85.32=$0.29 cents per shot.

Yes there is 7000 gr. of powder per pound, but that is by weight not volume.  But it is about 75 to 80 loads with a pound of powder using 100 gr. of powder by volume. So it is more economical then pellets.

You have to look at the whole picture, 100 grains by VOLUME 777 FFG weighs exactly "77.7 grains". See any relation to the name? A pound of Powder is 7000 grains by WEIGHT.

Before we get into the number of shots, you need to realize that 85 grains by VOLUME 777 FFG is equivelant to 100 grains of 777 pellets (2 pellets). (100 - 50 gr pellets = 50 - 100 gr charges per box)

If you were to shoot 100 grains by VOLUME charges of 777 FFG, you would get 90.09 shots per pound of powder. But remember the equaision above, 85 grains by VOLUME 777 FFG = 2 - 50 grain pellets. 85 grains by VOLUME equals 66.045 by WEIGHT (85 grains by volume X 0.777 by weight = 66.045 by weight). So you will will net 105.988 shots per pound. (7000 gr/wt / 66.045 gr/wt per shot = 105.988 shots per pound)

Hope I haven't lost you? Now to figure the economics of loose 777 powder versus 777 pellets.

You will have to fill in the cost of powder and pellets in your area to give you the exact answer you are looking for, but I will give you an example of about what it would cost at Wal*Mart. Their pellets and powder are high around here. 100 - 50 grain 777 pellets = $32.99 ($33), and a pound of 777 FFG powder = $25.99 ($26).

100 - 50 grain pellets = 50 - 100 grain charges. $33 / 50 shots = $.66 (66 cents) per shot .

105.988 - 85 gr/vol (66.045 gr/wt) = 1 pound (7000 gr/wt) 777 FFG powder. $26 / 105.988 shots = $.24531 (24.531 cents) per shot.

Remember, you will have to fill in the price of your powder and pellets for your area, but you will see it is much more economical to shoot loose powder that it is pellets.

Picked up some 777 powder here in NC the other day for $15 a lb. My experience is that whatever's left goes down even more as we get into the new year.
Pyrodex is $11... I see little difference between the two on accuracy for deer...

I was able to get 8 pounds of triple 7 last year from Wal-mart for $8.00 a pound. I am shooting real cheap.

Yea, I know you can get it cheap sometimes, seems like I can't hit it at the right time around here though the last couple years. They are getting wise to us up here though, they just mark it down a little bit every couple weeks, and it seems to always be gone before it's in my price range.

I can't believe Wal*Mart's  regular prices, you can buy it at Mom & Pop's for less around here. Them 777 Pellets at WM are crazy priced. Most everything is wiped out up here, so looks like there wont be any real bargains this year.

You are shooting for about 7.5 cents per shot for a 85 gr by Volume (100 gr pellet equivelant charge). Can't complain about that!

120 grains 777 FFG by volume would be 93.24 grains by weight, and would net you 75.075 shots per pound. In your case, $8 / 75.075 shots = 10.656 cents per shot.

I have heard Wall Mart is at a disadvantage on 777 or others do to management based decision to place the cost of all HAZ MAT shipments into the price of these items.
