under ice questions
« on: December 28, 2006, 01:33:50 PM »
Hey guys,

Gonna be setting for some under-ice beaver shortly. I am thinking of trying some baited conibear sets...but have a few questions.

First - How far under the ice do you let the trap hang?

Second - Is there something that I should do to make removal of the trap easier...assuming it is going to freeze in pretty good.

Third - Bait!?!? I've heard popple twigs and then I've heard PVC pipe on the trigger whats best for you?

Aside from setting 330's in runs from den entrances I've never tried any other sets under ice...the runs are a no-brainer and I had some success doing that, but I am going to make a few sets around the feedpile this time as well.

Any other easy sets would be helpful...I've read about snares on bait poles but don't know how that would work.

Thanks

-Keith

Keith,I have used popple for my baited 330 sets.My buddy Mike Tucker,is the one who started using the pvc trick.Either one set near the feed beds will work.
Make sure the trap is far enough below the ice, that a beaver doesn't freeze to the bottom of the ice when caught.
