411 JDLs

Hay Advocate:  Did you know that you can get a 43 caliber 405 grain bullet moving faster from the 444 than you can from the 411 JDL?  Check out the Beartooth Bullets website for the ballistic data on their different weight cast bullets.  Mikey again.

Where do you get that a 444 will get more velocity than a 411 JDJ.  I was on their web site and saw nothing like that.  Besides a 411 is too long for the Marlin with the bullet seated like JD says to seat them.  Let me know the information you have please.  Thank you.

The 411 would shoot some flatter.  Run the figures through a ballistic program and see.  The cartridge is too long for a Marlin anyhow.  The 416 JDJ will do 1730 with a 400 grain from a 14 inch Contender so a 411 will do the same.  It does make a snappy handgun cartridge though.

Because the bullet is seated to where the base of it is even with the base of the neck.  All of JD's data is based on that.  I suppose one could seat deep enough to fit but you would have to reduce the powder charge and that would defeat some of the added velocity.  I don't remember the OAL of my 416 JDJ but it is close to 3 inches.. I could measure one for you.  [/i]

The OAL of a 416 JDJ is 3.150"  The 411 with a 400 gr bullet would be roughly the same length.  With the short pistol bullets it would work.  But who would want to use them?

I thought about both of these,but settled on the 416-284 McPherson in a Savage M99R with a 26in barrel.

300gr Barnes 2500fps-4162fpe
350gr Swift 2400fps-4475fpe
400gr Speer 2200fps-4298fpe

Those are numbers the 411 or 416 can never match,rifle or not.Why?
COL is only 2.825 for 416-284  but it holds 2.5grs more powder than the standard 284win case.Which already holds more powder than the 444 Marlin,45/70,450 Marlin,308win etc...Its also loaded to 60,000psi,beyond the reach of Marlin or Winchester tube feds.Also the Savage can and does use spitzer bullets.Just one step down from that is my Win M1895 in 405Win with 28in barrel.It will drive a 300gr Hornady SP at 2450fps-3997fpe.

Or you could get a Winchester 1895 and have it rebarreled to the 411 Hawk and shoot those pointy bullets.   The 400 grain .411" Barnes X can be pushed to around 2,100 fps from a 24" barrel in the Hawk, but pressure starts getting kinda high - about 62,000 psi, I think.  North Fork is working on a 360 grain semi-spitzer that ought to be the cat's meow for 1895 Winchester in the 411 Hawk.
