454 vs 460 Barrel
« on: December 29, 2006, 01:24:52 PM »
I finally ordered my Encore Frame.

Now, how many of you have shot 45 colt or 454 in a 460.  How's the accuracy as the bullets have to "jump" to the rifling?

The 460 seems good as you can shoot all three, but I may never shoot the 460!

I have 45 Colt RCBS dies now, will I need new dies for 454 and/or 460?

Thanks

Jason

I had shot all three in my Encore 460 Mag, accuracy was very good with all three. The only difference was the point of impact changed.

I figured the point of impact would be all over.

But I have 45 Colt brass, dies etc, and I could shoot that but if I decided to up the ante, I could go up to the 454 or 460, so why not have that capability.

I wish they offered it in like 16 1/4 inch, so you could have a short rifle, or just shoot it as a pistol (heck, it would be only 1 1/4 longer than a 15" barrel).

Is yours a prohunter Redhawk?

You should be able to order a 16.25" barrel from Fox Ridge Outfitters, the T/C Custom Shop.

I may have to call, but the list doesn't see to allow that length and chamber according to their website.  But I don't see why they can't do it.

It's will probably be a little down the road at this point.

I wonder about chopping a 20" Katadin 460 barrel back to 16 1/4 and having the sight remounted.  Of course, the flutes would run all the way to the end of the barrel, but that's not really a problem, is it?

No it was a standard Encore 454 Casull barrel re-chambered to a 460 Mag.

Thanks everyone,

I'm seriously considering getting the Katadin Barrel.  I could use that as a rifle and carry my Blackhawk or Contender (45 Colt).  Why I don't know.  But usually if I'm hunting with a pistol, I take the rifle as well.
