Convert a Para Ordinance P-16 From 40 S&W To 10 MM
« on: December 28, 2006, 11:53:39 PM »
It has been suggested to me that it is a relatively straightforward procedure to convert a Para Ordinance P-16 in 40 S&W into a 10 mm.  While I do not have either the knowledge or skills to want to attempt to do this type of conversion on my own, I am interested to find out if this type of work is a challenge for a qualified gunsmith.  What would have to be done to accomplish this type of work?  Who would you recommend to do this work?

Has Para Ordinance ever produced a 10 mm pistol?  If so, this may facilitate the conversion by using their 10 mm barrel, magazine, extractor, etc.  In theory, as well as in practice, would this be the correct way to proceed?

Thank you.

I don't know if Para's were ever produced in 10 mm but doubt if they were. The biggest problem is the massive pressure increase of the 10mm over the 40 S&W or 10mmshort. Converting from 10mm to 40 has been fairly common as the 10mm's chewed up the frames of the 1911's. Going the other way is less easy. I assume the 40 you have does not use a supported barrel so a frame mod and new barrel are necessary. The recoil spings will need overhaul and buffers will also have to be used.. It could be done but I'd advise against it.
