Which is the best chronograph to purchase for under $300?

I plan on using it for bow and rifle

I've had good luck with my Shooting Chrony,i'm on my second one. My brother put a 60 gr. V-max through my first one.

For a first time buy I would get a cheap Chrony F1 for less than $80 just about anywhere. Keeps the potential loss to a minimum. They work just fine and are just as accurate as any you can buy, just no bells and whistles.

I have a Chrony that I bought shortly after they came out. -- knock on wood, haven't killed it YET-- It's got to be 25-30 years old. And it's still cooking. It tells me how fast my bullets are going. That's what I bought it for and that's what it does. When I get so gadget oriented that I can't take a pad and pencil to the shooting bench with me to record my velocities, I'll upgrade.

My Chroney quit on me. I sent it back and they fixed it - no charge. I would say customer service was good. Quality? It has worked fine, after the fix, for the last 3 years.

I paid less than $80 for my Shooting Chrony F-1 Master with the remote display a couple years ago, works very well.

Yeah I do that now. We had been shooting bolt guns all afternoon when my brother showed up with his AR-15. The scope is mounted pretty high so you can see through it. I wasn't paying attention and he moved the bags around to line up on the target. I'll tell you one thing, those 60 gr. V-Max's are hard on chronographs.

I have been using a Beta Master Crhony and am quite happy with it. My last time out with my NEF Ultra Varmint, I heard a ching on my second shot. About an hour later noticed one of the steel rods on the ground, but the unit was still working. Checked it out and there was no damage. $:-\$

I have an old Oehler and love it. Kinda worried that they are getting out of the consumer market. They gave me great service. Shot a sensor once.

This is why I love GB, I learn something every visit. I REALLY like the laser pointer idea. I usually carry a .22 rifle to check operation and set up but the laser can't do damage.

I have used my dad's F1 chrony for a few years. I have been thinking, I wonder if anybody makes an armored box for them. I was thinking some 2X4 solid stock could make a deflector to save the chrony, just an idea.

I like the F1, it seems very well built and relatively accurate.

Thanx Swampfox, (aka Francis Marion?), that's a reasonable price for such a high-tech piece of equipment. I just called Oehler Research & was sorry to hear from the lady that they wouldn't be resuming production on their 35P chrono's. Merry Christmas, JD45

What's "Best"? Well, that's somewhat like Ford vs. Chevy! They all work but the right answer depends a lot on what you will want your new Chronograph to do. If all you want, now or in the future, is velocities then the various Chronys offer the biggest bang for the least bucks.

I wanted more. Wanted things like a built-in printer, a good ballistics computer, a seperate display/computer to sit on the bench and outta the line of fire, and low replacement cost of the optical screens if need be. That led me to the PACT Pro and I have no reason now, after 12 years, to feel I made a mistake. Don't know what an Oehler, other than their fablous and expensive Ballistics Lab model, could do better for me. (Never shot a screen, but it's still an option each shooting session!)

I have a beta master. I haven't shot it yet, but I haven't used it much. Until I get used to shooting over it I am using wooden dowels and not the steel rods. I plan to work up some new loads for all my rifles so it will be a test. I currently load for 44mag., 444 marlin, 270 rem. mountain, 243 handi, 30-06 pump carbine, 22-250 rem. vs, and 7mm rem. mag.

For the reason above it is best to have a chrony that the electronics are separate from the screens, the brains are on your shooting bench and not in the danger zone, I have the PACT XP1 chrono, medium price and top level performance.

deffinately an Oehler if you can afford it. I cant and use a Chrony but drewl everytime i use my buddys.

I have the Pro Chrono Digital. I echo what Gregory's link said by Randy Wakeman. I have used mine without a hiccup. Whatever you get, you will be totally surprised at your handloads. I was nowhere what I thought I was getting in velocity. I won’t do any load testing without one.

For the best prices I have found on the Chrony go to e-bay and search for " chrony F-1 alpha beta gamma" . When you get there find D & R Sports Center with their listings for buy it now on each of these models. The gamma master includes a printer and the whole set-up is under 175.00 shipping and all.
