ken'

are you aware of the terrible muzzle blast that comes from comping a rifle?   it is much greater than the normal muzzle blast of a rifle.

i'd do without that comp'd barrel and get a regular .270 because of the noise and the relatively light recoil generated by the .270 anyway.

it is a good choice of a cartridge!

You know....I was wondering about that! I have shot but not kept a couple of comped hand cannons and rejected them for that reason. Do the "regular" barrels shoot pretty good. I like bull barrels but didn't see them offered.  Ken

Ken,

Yes, they're a bit hard to find, they haven't made any for several years, H&R did find a bunch at the factory last year and offered them, they went quick.

I shoot with hearing protection even when hunting, I've lost too much hearing to be able to afford loosing any more. The compensated muzzle not only reduces recoil, but also muzzle rise. I shoot 200gr Nosler partitions in the '06, its a dream to shoot off the bench, but not the guy next to me!! The last trip I was shooting in a baffled position, the fella next to me was shooting a 300 winmag with the big 50BMG style brake on his rifle, he was complaining about my muzzle blast, asked what the heck I was shooting, believe it or not!! :o

You can also remove the brake, it screws on, someone here or ebay had thread protectors for them recently.

I also have/had a standard contour 270 barrel that I just sold Aaron ( myarmor), it shot very well, was my first used barrel purchased.

Ok...maybe I should rethink this whole plan I have. I bought the .204 because it was just plain cool! I have since plent 4x the cash on optics to punch paper with. I probably won't spend much time hunting with it...not much I can use it for in Lower Michigan. I had origiinally planned each caliber to be a complete rifle, mostly because I have some room in the safe, but the biggest reason was not knowing how many rounds these recievers will handle.  The .270 being my favorite round covers most anything on this continent so would probably get the nod when actually hunting...but I MUST have a shooter! I have always been a patient hunter...one shot is my motto. Is it reasoable to expect one hole groups from a standard .270 barrel. 22" isn't much time to get that bullet on the right track for long shots is it? I can see a PD hunt in my future along with some long waited bigger game hunts. I like to have intimate knowledge of my tools before attempting head shots at long range. Do you think I can dial in a standard barrel to satisfy my thirst for accuracy?  And do you feel that shooting thousands of round in different calibers will eat a single reciever in my life-time? Ken

I don't think you need to worry about the frame, current production SB2 frames are pretty tough, it's the soft, partially enclosed underlug that is the weak link, wear on it will ultimately be the cause of deteriorating accuracy.

That said, one member here shot 8000 rounds thru 5 barrels, one of em over 2500 rounds before he had to replace the hammer spring, a $2 part.

when i get a Handi' home.......i pull the wood off of it........grease everything down for a couple weeks with Valvoline's moly-fortified front-end grease (automotive) and allow the moly and grease to etch their way into the metal.  i put wood preservative on the wood, actually letting it soak.   i then grease the hinge pin in the frame and the ejector housing where it meets the hinge pin.  i put better (longer) screws into the forearm holding the plastic retainer in place.

after two weeks i spray the bore clean with brake cleaner to degrease it.   then i assemble the firearm and am ready to use it.    the moly/grease help protect it from rust as well as hinge-pin wear.

when i close the action on a Handi' to fire it............i do it with serious intent.......not weakly to try to save any harm.   i close it energetically and let the grease on the hinge pin and ejector housing provide protection from wear.    that way my accuracy is consistent.

will you get an accurate Handi'?     probably.    particularly with handloads and careful/reasonable load development you will realize more accuracy dollar for dollar than most other rifles will provide.

my light-barrel'd .223 will put three shots into .213" center-to-center when sighting in at 50 yds'.   that's plenty good for shooting prairie dogs......i'd think.   i'd actually, honestly expect my bull-barrel'd .223 to do even better.

by the way:  those who know will tell you that the .270 is capable of excellent accuracy.

take care,

Yup...they are accurate...and when you RTV bed the forend...they are very consistent as well..This group was shot over 2 days..The first shot is in the lower left hand corner..I adjusted the scope to the right..and shot the next 2 shots that are at 3 o'clock on the bull..I put it away..and started shooting another rifle..and ran out of time..When I came back the next day..I adjusted the scope up and a little to the left..and fired the next 2 shots at about 1:30 on the targets bull...I adjusted up and a couple clicks left..it put me right where I wanted to be with the Federal Fusion ammo...and the Burris FF2 BP scope...I shot the clover leaf...check the target..and fired 2 snap shots from the low carry position off hand..they went left and right of the clover leaf...The Ultra Comps are very accurate...Loud...oh yea...especially if you are in a shooting booth..or shooting on a hillside...Get one if you can..they are good shooters...

ken,

i'm glad you like the input.

i just think that i've seen such excellent accuracy out of a couple of Handi's that weren't comp'd; so i believe it isn't necessary for accuracy' sake.    it is, however, a trick.......to vent a barrel so that it's hot gases have less impact on a bullet leaving the muzzle.........as an aid to accuracy.   it is probably used most in competitions by those shooting smallbores (.22 rimfires).

but i've seen these Handi's do so well that i wouldn't risk my hearing to a Comp'd rifle.

take care,

I tried  one of the 270 ultra comp it shot ok from what little I used
it.It however was not something I enjoyed shooting at all . I have a Winchester 338 Magnum that i would rather shoot . I also have a handi 308 and 223 that I
do like.

The one nice thing about these Ultra Comps is the muzzle brake is threaded on ...and one can have thread protectors made to go right on when it's taken off..I know Wayne York will make them for anyone needing one..
