I need a measurement.
« on: December 30, 2006, 04:12:09 PM »
Does anyone have a Browning Gold 12 ga. 3½ chamber barrel which they could measure the distance from the ejector to the rear end of the barrel for me?  I believe that I have a barrel which is mis-marked as having a 3½" chamber but in reality has a 3" chamber.
A customer complained that his wouldn't eject Winchester Xpert 3½" shells after being fiired.  The fired shell case is 3 7/16" long and that is longer than the ejector to forward end of the ejection port distance. I believe that the Factory marked the barrel as having a 3½" chamber (and it may have) but the ejector to forward end of the ejecton port is shorter than the length of the fired shell.  It is possible that a 3" barrel extension was put on a 3" chambered barrel.  I need this measurement to make this determination.  Thanks for any help you might offer.  Please don't think or suggest that the receiver has anything to do with this. It just doesn't in this particular shotgun.

Those are not real common around here and I haven't seen one in several months, even on a local dealers rack. It is an interesting problem.. Is there a dimensional difference between the 3 inch receiver and the 3 1/2 inch receiver? Does the shotgun function with a barrel from another 3 1/2 inch gun?? If the ejected empty clears the chamber of the barrel then perhaps the receiver is the problem...?

The fired shell does not clear the barrel extension.  The receiver has nothing to do with the distance from the ejector to rear of the barrel.
The fired shell stops when it hits the ejector and if the forward end of the fired shell was clear of the rear of the barrel (the forward end of the ejection port) the shell would pivot out of the ejection port.  That is why I need to know the distance I asked for.  I sincerely hope that someone has one of these shotguns and will be kind enough to send me this measurement.
Thank you,

Doc-of the fired shell casing hits the ejector before the front end of the unfolded case clears the chamber, it's not a 3 1/2 inch barrel..regardless of what's on the side of the thing. Give Browning customer service a call and discribe the problem.. They've been really easy to deal with in my past interactions with them. They bent over backwards when the customer service folks at Winchester totally bummed me out. The shell not clearing the chamber at the point of striking the ejector is all that is required. Call customer service,,they'll likely want the thing back and will replace it.. I clipped the following from the Browning website. I certainly hope this helps!!

Thanks a lot.  Glad someone understands the problem without talking receivers.  I will give Browning a call tomorrow and see if they can help this customer.  Appreciate the answer.
