.25 ACP vs. Winchester 777 primers
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:25:53 PM »
I've read many good things in this forum about the .25ACP breechplug conversion and I'm considering the purchase of one.

The new Winchester 777 primers have now hit the market and advertise less of a crud ring problem.
Is this because it's not as "hot" of a charge as compared to other primers?
Are there any other benefits to the W777 primers like reduced blowback or anything else?

I'm just wondering if the .25ACP is still the ultimate way to go in a Huntsman/Sidekick?
Besides eliminating the awful NEF breechplug, what other benefit does the .25ACP provide?
Appreciate getting feedback from users of either

I think the NEF primer carrier is the best out there! I use the Win. T7 209 primers with T7 powder and no crud ring! I think the Win. T7 primers have already made the .25 ACP plug absolete. Speaking of breech plugs I have no problem with the NEF plug.

I replaced the original breech plug with the 25ACP in mine mainly because of misfires and lots of blowback. Some say back off on the stock plug a little, but I didn't feel comfortable with that - would rather properly install it as directed. The original breech plug is also awkward to remove with the supplied tool and a scope. Plus, you still have to clean those orange plastic primer carriers, which is a major PITA, and they have a limited lifetime. The original system would allow blowback around the firing fin into the action. If the original system worked fine I would have never thought of replacing it. Yes, there is the initial investment, but I bought 1000 small rifle primers for $17, compared to $50 for that #of 209s.  The brass will last forever. My experience has shown it to be a vast improvement over the original plug. However, there is no ignition system that will eliminate the crud ring entirely. It may be reduced, but it is still there. It is due to the inherent properties of the TS.

I have had the .25 ACP breech plug for 1-1/2 years, when the 777 primers came out I thought I would give them a try. I gave all the 209 primers a try, Win-ML, Win-209, Win-777, Federal 209, CCI, Rem 209-4, Rem Kleanbore, there is not one that even comes close to the .25 ACP with CCI-400 (small rifle primers). The blowback with the 209's is bad, the .25 ACP blowback is almost non-existant.

I woud say the .25 ACP is without a doubt the best ignition for the Huntsman. The 209 primer carriers work well for hunting, and if that is the only time you shoot you, it might not pay you to change the .25 ACP, but if you have the things for loading brass, you wont be sorry.

The .25 ACP plug also does away with the crappy BP and BP tool. You can use a socket or a Knight BP tool.

The .25 ACP does not eliminate the 777 crud ring completely in my Huntsman, but neither did the Win-777 primers or any of the 209's for that matter.

I would also agree with everything that usherj and Odinbreaker said before me.

Where is the best place to buy the 25 acp adapter?

It would be nice if someone did a real lab test small rifle primer vs. Win. T7 209. Now I did a little test of my own that may or may not prove anything. I fired two SR. primers and two T7 209 primers in my Sidekick. Both SR. primers shot flame about 2" out the end of the barrel. I then fired the two T7 209 primers and there was no flame at all. I don't have a .25 acp convertion but it's easy to use SR. primers. I took a used 209 primer right size drill bit and pressed in the small rifle primer on my shotgun press. I then used the plastic primer carrier, it looked and worked good!

The idea you came up with is a nice solution. The source for the 25ACP breech plugs also has the same idea. The kit is called the Variflame adaptor. Comes with reusable primer cups and tools to remove and reprime. But your solution didn't cost anything! :)
