Retiring the 336
« on: December 31, 2006, 04:27:09 AM »
Bought a new 336W last year just before season opened.  I put a nice 1.5x4.5 Bushnell on it, and bagged a nice doe with it, dropped her in her tracks.  But, just after season closed, I run across a good deal on a used 1894 in 357.  I was already set up to reload the 357, so I played with a few loads, and settled on the XTPFP  over a near full dose of LilGun.

Been real curious about what it'd do, so I've been carrying it all year.  Finially scored with it the other day, and was quite impressed. Turned both lungs into jelly, and he went about 20 yards before cartwheeling into a pile. I actually saw blood pooring out of the entrance hole as he took off.  Satisfied with what it'd do, I went back to the 336.

That thing now feels like a field cannon compared to the little 94.   So, the 336 is now officially retired, and the 94 is going to see a lot of use.

The reason I posted this story is for those who have been considering the 94 in 357 or 44, go for it.  You'll be happy you did.

Just to clarify a little.  I hunt in southern Alabama, out of a tree stand, for little deer, with most shots under a 100 yards, usually less than 50.  I'm also retired, disabled some, fat , and ugly. ::)

Someone elses mileage may vary.

I've sold a few guns over the years that I sorely regretted, some I didn't.  Problem was, I never knew until they were long gone that I'd miss them.

With that in mind, I'll never sell another one.  The grandkids can fight over them when I'm gone.

Thanks for posting this, OG. I have a Marlin 1894C and was thinking of doubling my lever action joy by adding a 336 to my collection. Your post is making me reconsider that option. Perhaps I'll buy a reloading press instead.  ;D

Old Geezer, sounds like you could be my brother. At least the disabled, fat, & ugly part.  ;D I have a 1894CP but have not hunted it. Sounds like I should. Blessings, Byron
