TC 'Cheapshot' sabots w/pure lead HP - anyone use them?
« on: November 08, 2006, 02:41:17 PM »
It's been a good season so far. Before seaon, I sighted in rifle with standard load - 240gr XTP in TC's MagExpress - and tried out a few of TC's 'CheapShot' pure lead sabots on paper. They're cheap, alright - $3.99/box of 20 - and seemed to shoot well, grouping the same as XTP, if not better. After taking two deer using the XTP... I decided to give the CheapShots a try on game. I've since killed one buck and one doe, and... these things work just great. I shot the buck from from high up a tree, hitting between shoulder blade - removed about 3" of neck/spine, he dropped straight down. Shot a doe tonight; hit right rear ribcage, bullet angled across and broken bones in off shoulder before exiting, leaving a large hole; deer went about 30 yards on 3 legs. What was odd, was the entrance; broke three ribs, and part of gut was hanging out.

Anyhow... it is nice to find a good, cheap bulllet; I think I'll use these from now on. I don't think the XTP does any better. Anyone else here using these 'Cheapshot' sabots? Let me know how they've worked out.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Something else you should try is a .429 diameter lead semi-wadcutter
in the sabot. I have them in 200 and 240 grain and they do well.
I am now looking for a place just to buy sabots that is reasonable .

Depends on the powder choice & how far you are shooting them. I had terrible "hourglass" target results using these with 777 beyond 75 yards.

Lots of harvests have been reported - as long as 202 yards, using the Cheapshots.

I have been using the CheapShots for a few years now in my Huntsman.  Very accurate sabot and will knock a deer flat about as good as any of the higher priced sabots.  Haven't had a bit of problems with them and I try to stock up when Bass Pro has them on sale for $1.88 a package of 20.

I bought 10 packs of them at Bass Pro a couple months ago for $1.88 / 20 pack too. I just bought them for plinking but don't see any reason they wouldn't do just fine on deer also. I got tho thinking later on the way home, why didn't I buy all of those things? You can't even buy the sabots for what I paid for the sabots and bullets. Still 200 bullets and sabots for $18.80 is dirt cheep. ;D

Have no fear to use them on deer. Didn't mean to rhyme - but I had the time. ;D

You got a great buy Busta. T/C says to use the Cheapshots for plinking - then the Mag Sabots for hunting. There are some here that feel T/C got that saying backwards.

My longest kill to date was with a T/C CheapShot. That be 200 yards +/- juat a couple of feet. I started with the XTP's when I lost my first muzzleloading buck. I felt it was good shot placement. Saw the buck rock with the hit. No blood trail!!!! Now I'm not slaming XTP's. Planty of good hunters have better luck than I. But I switched to the CheapShots. I never lost a deer after the switch. Are they pure lead?? Close enought for me! Funny thing is once I went pure lead, I never went back. I stoped shooting sabots, and now shoot pure lead conicals in the 460 grain up range.

T/C CheapShot's will do the job on deer with better than good accuracy!

IMHO!

Does Bass Pro put the Cheap Shots on sale online or at the stores or both? I don`t have a store near me. Thanks-Jack.

mid south sells the sabots  and i cast a lead bullet out of a lee mold  the big 452  with the large megaplate  cast them out of wheel weights    255grain  sabots r under 5bucks for 50  mold 14 buck  lead free  and they will knock a deer of any size down as well as anything
but use hard lead   soft lead will not shoot good in a sabot     use 90 grains of 2f black powder  the mold is for the 45long colt use the black knight sabots

never to much gun

9 deer 9 shots at ranges from 15 ft to 115 yards. None went farther than 30 yards after the hit.7 of those deer were hit with a 40gr charge of 3f Triple 7 ( 1300fps ) in my daughter's Traditions Tracker.2 were 70 grn charges ( 1700 fps) and one hit knocked 1/2 of the left lung out the exit hole.It is an absolutely superb load! Gonna have a mold made so I can cast them myself. Accurate too. both rifles shoot sub 2 inch groups at 100 yards.

Is there a site where we could check them out?

I just ordered some knight rifles 260 grain hollow point sabot lead bullets ..

so I can try a few different grain bullets.

so far I have 1 hundred 230 grain jackets hollow points

twenty 250 grain Hornady SST sabots

I think I should start with about 70 grains of loose pyrodex FF and work up a load for different rounds...

But to use the same grain amount for all bullets and see which holes the best group at 70 yards with iron sights...

I found some new in the foam carton them hospital blood vials that are glass with a purple rubber cap on the top..

Maybe I can use them to hold Exactly 70 grains in each of loose powder and the foam will hold each vial from bumping each other. The pack of them I found was 100 of the same size. shown in this pic.

perfect units for target practising....

God Bless and Hope this New Hobby becomes one to last me a life time with all this ammo

Ron, Thanks alot... From the many years of shotgun and lead slugs found that they seem to stay together after shoulder blades and such from whitetails...

I just hate to searching while eattin some deer steaks them hiden fragments of jacketed bullets..

My Wifes gun is a remington 1100 with the rifled barrel...Bummer,so we had to buy the more exspensive rounds for this season. thankfully they have lead saboted slugs for the 20 gauge out there.
So we checked the local two gun shops the other day while out gathering my black powder goodies and couldn't find a used smooth bore  slug barrel for it...

Next year she plans to join me back in the woods with it and me with the muzzle loader.. she  is finding more of a interest now that she bought me for my Bday and CHRISTmas gift a 2007 4x2 suzuki Ozark to Putter around the fields and woodlots on, and to cart the deer back to the Old 4x4 dodge ram...

Thanks alot for Posting the site... Will help me and others make choices for sure...
