Hunting Dog Training Videos
« on: March 18, 2007, 09:39:30 AM »
It seems that in today's day you can find quality training videos for nearly anything you want to learn or do.  Some are a lot better than others and some are just plain overpriced hype that aren't worth the plastic to wrap them! :(

Does anyone know of any quality hunting dog training videos?  I would like one for upland game birds and also one to teach a dog about duck hunting and retrieving.  Any other videos on dog training would be greatly appreciated.  I have not yet decided what kind of dog to get for hunting but am leaning towards the German Wirehaired. :o  I hear they are not nearly as high strung as German shorthaired pointers, are a little smaller and are great for both land and water.  I'm not sure if they shed or not-Better if they didn't but I'm not sure.  Any thoughts on that type of dog would be appreciated as well. ;D

Thanks,

Bob

I think the george hikok videos wee pretty good. The one from NAVHDA is also good. A wirehair may not be your best choice if you don't have training experience though. They are quick learners, but can be tricky. They are bigger not smaller than shortharis. Mine do need to be stripped twice a year. They don't shed like other dogs, more like people. A few hairs here and there and then the pluckint the spring to get the loose gurd hairs out. They don't "blow "their coats like other dogs. You also have to watch their ears as they can grow hair in the canals and be prone to yeast infections. Like hounds are.

They are not high strung like shorthairs, but aren't that mellow either. Lots of exercise makes them very nice in the house though. They do well in the water, no match for a Chessie, but then what is in the water? I love mine and wouldn't have anything else.

Moxgrove,

Where did you buy yours from and about how much do they cost?  Also, you said they were bigger than the German Shorthair-How much do they on average weigh?

Thanks for the input and references on videos-I'll look into them and see if I can find them.

Thanks,

Bob

I had adraahthaar from vom kervinshof in Oklahoma. My two wirehairs I now have are from Funkskennels up by long lake . I know someone is breeding from his line with three devils line in Belle Plaine, I can't recall the name off hand. They run about 600 for females and I think 475 for females from funk. I would definitely check the Navhda or Vdd scores of the parents before getting a pup. My male is a hair under 85 pounds and 28 in at the withewrs. my female is 25 in and about 65 punds. they are larger than usual. they run usually 55- 70 pounds with females being at the smaller end.  The locations above are in Mn.

Sorry I didn't proof read the lower price is for males. Jerry does have a website by the way.
funkskennels.com. His current prices might be there.

I checked his website 450  for girls 375 for boys. Bdarn.com the bird dog and retriever news site also lists breeders in the upper midwest. also I highly suggest the vdd-gna website and the gwpca website. It gives you the chance to learn a lot about the dogs - good and bad from the peole who really know and love them.  ;D
