New loader needs some advice
« on: December 31, 2006, 02:16:28 PM »
I posted the following in the NEF forum but it really belongs here. I am new to reloading (just fired by first 308 rounds yesterday) I am now trying to load for my Savage .223 bolt. I don't know if anyone is around tonight but I need some help. Just when I start to get cocky I screw up. I'm trying to load 223 round for my Savage bolt action but I need some help. I can close the bolt on a loaded round but it definately closes with more resistance than normal. When I put the case in without a bullet seated it also closes with the same higher resistance. The cases are once fired Winchester (shot through the same rifle I am loading for now) were trimmed to 1.75 and I full length sized them but maybe I screwed up on the sizing beause they are a bit snug towards the base. Since I can close the bolt will these be safe to shoot if the overall lenth is within norm?  If not, do I need to resize them? Can I resize with the primers in. If not, how do I safely get the primers out? Should I have run a case or 2 into the gun before I primed them just to check it out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take one you've chambered that way and look at the bullet in it. Can you see little nic's around the bullet? If there are, your probally getting the bullet's into the lands and need to seat the bullet's deeper. If thats not it and you've already run several into it, look at the bolt face. What your looking for is brass rubbing off the back of the case. If you do have that and not land marks on the bullet's you can probally shoot them. If you don't want to try that, pull the bullet's and set your re-size die down more and re-size. Be sure and take the de-prime pin out of the expander plug first. Be careful not to get lube inside that might contaminate the primer. After resizing, run the case into the chamber and make sure it fit's.

Were you trying to partical re-size? If so, for now don't do that. Learn to make good shells befor you try to make great shells. When you put your die in the press, have the ram all the way up with the shell holder in it. Screw the die all the way to the shell holder then drop the ram and screw the die in about a half turn. One of these things should fix the problem. But fix the problem befor you reload many more.

Thanks, I think a messed with the sizer while I removed the decap pin and polished the neck sizing spindle. I wasn't trying just to neck size I was trying to full length size but I don't think I had the die as far down as it should have been. So I don't think I I was told that it's not a bad idea. The bullets don't seem to have any marks on them. I can't see any brass on the bolt face. The bold closes hard even without the bullets seated. Happy New Year and thanks for the advice.

I removed my neck spindle and snugged the seating die onto the shell holder. I then ran a couple of my problem cases through the sizer minus the neck spindle. The little adjustment worked. The cases now feed well into my bolt action. So I ran the rest of the cases through the resizer, being careful with the lube. I then filled them and seated the bullets. Every thing works fine now. Thanks for the information.

In my earlier post I was ment to say sizing die not seating die. When I snugged the sizing die down it solved my problem.
