DIY caribou 2007 hunt...where?

Knowing that things have changed as far as the herds go, where should I try a DIY caribou hunt. I am planning on the 1st week of Sept. will use an air taxi, suggestions?

Gun or archery?  Makes a big differance.  For gun I would recommend being dropped off for the Malchatna herd (area north of Dillingham).  Or the North Slope, check with outfitters at Coldfoot, Ft Yukon, Deadhorse, or Bettles.  If you are into archery, just drive the haul road.

I think the Mulchatna herd is down to 50,000 or so animals estimated these days. It was close to 250,000 in the 90's.  Still if your air taxi can get you in the right spot you might do ok - be prepared to pay for a long flight to get in the right spot. There may be new restrictions come next fall.  I can't remember what new regulations are proposed - if any.

Three of us hunted the Mulchatna herd in 2003, we saw maybe 40 caribou, maybe 8 were good bulls, 2 were around B&C ( we shot em but never had em measured). The next year the 2 guys I hunted with went back and saw 2 caribou, luckily they were both decent bulls and they tagged out.  I'm no expert on caribou but that doesn't sound like a heck of a lot for two one week hunts.  I understand  that the herd has dwindled to the point that you may want to hedge your bets by hunting elsewhere.  Check with freshwater adventures in Dillingham, they are an air taxi and were straight with us both times that we went up.
